Dec 2012

The social contract has had 26 proverbial holes shot in it...it's a gaping hole. I agree mental health needs to be increased, but the costs are tremendous and won't be accomplished quickly. School functions have armed guards, most of them sports events. How ever we end up with this, the gun industry MUST bear the cost of regulation...and that includes, sadly, armed security guards at elementary schools.

Were I the parent of a young elementary child today ... again, yes. And neither do I want my kid's teacher to have a gun. It makes absolutely no sense. Where will it be kept? Well locked away, of course. When the unthinkable happens...how long will it take for him/her to access it? And in mayhem, and with kids all around, at what point should he or she shoot? It is the teacher's job to be defensive and manage the kids as best as possible. Not play Rambo...that's what the security guard is paid to do.

Dec 2012

It's the worst idea yet. It once again reinforces the idea that you need violence and weapons in your life. It's downright sick.

Just sick. Pretty soon we will be buying metal detectors to put in the entrances of schools. We have them at the entrances of the courts in LA. Everyone gets pretty hardened to them, but in the end, you don't feel safer, you just feel less free.

The proliferation of guns and security is what is making Americans feel violated, less free.

Guns engenders more guns. The fear that causes people to want armed guards everywhere engenders more fear. The fear and the guns are a vicious cycle that are gradually but with increasing speed are making life in this country an obstacle course.

No. Gunmen in the schools is a horrible idea. The worst yet.

after the holidays? Other than hope or pretend that it "can't happen here"?

Or wait until we have a 1st rate mental health system and can identify every future shooter? How much in taxes would we be willing to pay? It's extremely revenue negative.

And I disagree that the proliferation of guns is more fearful than what happened at Sandy Hook. And what is feared, with all due respect to gun folk, it's the crazy ones who spoil it for the rest.

I've been converted from the sheer futility of banning guns. It would be preferable, but it's not going to happen and I'm not willing to risk kids lives daily for pie in the sky.

We can, given our skills at regulating vehicles, alcohol, cigarettes, air travel, even domestic pet ... regulate and deal with guns in their 21st century reality. They're managed, controlled, taxed, confiscated in certain situations. There is a big pile of money there that can be used, revenue positive. We can do this.

And it's not GUNMEN in schools unless they are there to shoot kids, speaking of paranoia. We speak of Security Guards, like Crossing Guards, just armed and ready should a real gunman get stupid ideas.

We're on the same page. And the gun industry will do it and pay for it and be grateful...because it is in their best interests to do so...bad as I hate to admit it. They also know we can't just presto make then all illegal or swoop up all the guns...not possible.

It is huge societal shift...and so much money and politics and emotions ... and there will probably be a big struggle for "rights" to do the job and that scares me a bit.

that it deprives them of a 2nd Amendment right, lol. Tax them like cigarettes - to make ownership VERY costly and thereby discourage excessive ownership. And to pay for the harm they do to society.

And if gun nuts whine about how expensive they are, just tell them they need to get a job, or work harder, or borrow $20k from the parents to pay for the gun expenses, or start a business to make more money to pay for their toys.

I would favor taxing the possessors of guns to pay for guards in the schools and mental health care. If they are to pay for all that, the taxes would have to be rather high, don't you think. Maybe we should also require gun owners to pay for some of the extra equipment our police officers need to be prepared for run-ins with gun owners.

Most parents are not going to want to send their children to a school to face an armed guard at the door.

That is not the image of a happy, carefree childhood that parents want for their children.

And private schools will not restore the innocence.

There has to a better solution, less emphasis on guns and shooting and violence in our society.

This Christmas would be a good time to renew our commitment to peace.

And we could start by cutting military programs, in particular our bases overseas, instead of decreasing funds to domestic programs that help American people.

Most people don't think of Liability, but there is no way this is going to happen...it is not affordable. Liability Insurance would be sky high. More like any joe blow willing to take their protect-our-schools course.

So now we'll have "good guys" blasting away at the "bad guys" with lil children caught in the crossfire.

What could possibly go wrong or be wrong about that?!

I don't have a problem with a psychologically evaluated cop in each school. Arming teachers, however, should be out of the question.

As far as paying for it, I think local police departments would have to donate/volunteer officers, but that would mean less ticket revenue for the county. Perhaps they could increase taxes on guns and ammo?

the Mall, for instance, an armed camp. Just a safer place to shop given that mall shooting is going up. Security Guards are a far cry from an armed camp. Many schools already have them.

Would it work? Have a better idea? What? Wait until we round all the guns up? Wait until we have a top notch mental health system?

Forget the messenger and think proactively.

the filthiest form of pornography"? Why yes, Mr. LaPierre. It is. And what do you think people running around with assault rifles with humongous magazines are doing, and actively emulating?

You blame people who watch a movie, you blame people who play a video game, and it's all their fault. It certainly couldn't possibly be the person who actually possesses the assault rifles and use them. It couldn't possibly be that for them, it's not just a fantasy that it is a reality.

A database for the mentally ill. Yeah, that will work out really well.

Here's the part that made me scream out "Because of you and your lobbyists you asshole!". When this horrible excuse for a human being had the NERVE to say that prosecutions for gun violations were lower.

Why in the fuck do you think that is? Could it be that you and your lobbyists have engineered legislation designed to put guns in every hand they can and make it legal?

I had to quit watching it at about 10 minutes in. I can't stand to see more. This was the most hypocritical, self-serving, outrageous and outright twisted piece of garbage I've ever heard.

Taxing the gigantic gun industustry..and all the adjunct industries they depend on. The funds are many and wide. It does not address how, but it's a model as everyone...the left included...has few ideas. At least ones that aren't expensive and don't take a decade or so.

The people who spoke out at the NRA's so-called press conference have a lot of courage.

And because of them, the majority opinion became part of the conference.

I do feel that the NRA's call for more guns and its tired hair-splitting on what makes something an assault rifle has run its course.

Maybe it's time for another GOP institution to fall apart like the party.

217. More waiting periods and background checks
Fri Dec 21, 2012, 02:11 PM
Dec 2012

Seems there should be a waiting period on stories printed/broadcast by the media. So many 'facts' are so often very wrong. They should have to verify all the facts prior to broadcasting a story. I'm thinking a 2 week wait to verify information would be acceptable.

Background checks on those in the media reporting said 'facts' should all be implemented. A person of unsound mind can certainly convey much false information meant only to hurt and inflame others.

We should infringe on all of our rights, not just the 2nd Amendment, that would make this a much more wonderful nation to live in.

doors that open to the outside from each individual classroom thereby allowing people to escape in an emergency situation rather than hide in closets and under desks. The neanderthal approach of the NRA is oxymoronic in a "learning institution". Their approach caters to the limbic primordial brain rather than the higher mind. Another paradox is that they are encouraging militarization of public schools when they are the one's constantly telling us government is going to take "their" guns. What an absolutely confusing and absurd organization. Their uncouthness in light of this tragedy is astounding. The fact that they release this the Friday before Christmas also says a lot about their character.
