(2,876 posts)it takes a major disaster and a threat to the lives of your own family to finally wake up to the obvious. Clearly their ol' time religion isn't worth a warm bucket of spit. (No offense to warm buckets of spit.)

(31,013 posts)I knew damn well that trump wouldn't acknowledge the life-saving efforts of those Mexican rescue workers, and I sure as hell knew he wouldn't convey any thanks to the classy, intelligent Mexican President who dispatched them. Respect to that sheriff---even if his gratitude is short-lived. If trump had a single ounce of decency, he'd have those rescue workers appear at the White House and present them with service awards. That's what Joe Biden would have done---but then, Joe Biden would never have appointed the likes of Stephen Miller or Kristi Noem to positions of such responsibility.

(6,032 posts)is about USAID. Why did the rest of the world respect the USA in the past? Why are they no longer impressed with us? How much longer can we expect assistance such as this in the future, if, as policy, we have decided to ignore fellow humans in need? Estimates are in the millions for future unnecessary deaths due to the U.S. turning our backs on those less fortunate by cutting USAID support.

(7,974 posts)Do you really care about how he got enlightened? He got there. And his remarks were public. So, he will not be doing other things. And he's a freaking Sheriff.
This is exactly what we need. It's a shame that such a tragedy occured, but when he saw Mexicans risk their own lives to save his world, he responded appropriately. He saw more response from Mexicans than from Pam Bondi. That's not lost on him.
I understand how you feel, and I will be disappointed if he falls back to wicked ways, but everytime he looks at his family, he's going to remember. He has a path forward that may not be easy for him, but he's another brick in the wall. We all learn. This was a tough lesson to learn, but give him a chance to go forth and do no more harm.
"From this day forward..." ICE is going to eff with him, because this will get back to the evil Orange Turd. It's like he's declared a sanctuary city.
I think this is all good, kinda Biblical. Oh, I know you don't want to hear that. And no, I'm not saying the flood was good. But, somewhere on the road to Damascus...

(8,521 posts)If we want people to not just turn away from MAGA hatred and bigotry, but also to work with us to defeat it, spewing our own hatred of them is not a winning strategy.
Besides, all of the FAFO gloating over Trump voters' misfortunes or insulting them even as they see the light is not good for our own souls.

(16,659 posts)I'm not seeing any news reports about the event described in the TikToko video. There are quite a few video clips of Sheriff Leitha talking about the floods, but I'm not seeing any where he's talking about Mexicans rescuing his daughter and grandkid, just the TikTok narrator "quoting" him. Why not show the actual footage?
