This is what is killing the Republican Party right before our eyes

They can not tell their greatest weaknesses from their greatest strengths. As a result the leadership of the Party, its brain trusts so to speak, and its most monied internal and external influences, are all striving to secure the aliegance of the most radical elements of the party at the expense of their more moderate elements. In short they are chasing a smaller and smaller segment of a rapidly decreasing pie because they think it has the sweetest berry in it. Sweet berry or no, they have lost the rest of the pie.

Heritage has gone over to the Tea Party, AEI and all the rest are no better. They will promote the most extreme positions unrelentingly in order to hold onto that small and shrinking cadre as the rest of the Party goes directionless. I could actually see a third Party arising out of this, a conservative one to be sure, but at least one that could be bargained with.
