NRA members are anti-tax and anti-public school, and have no place in the school safety conversation

I know that there are some socially liberal NRA members, but those are not the members that dominate the direction and the voice of their organization.

When I think of NRA members, I think of the sort that complain about god being removed from schools, believe that teachers deserve pay-cuts, and rage about their taxes going to fund public schools. Gut school funding through anti-tax ballot measures, then rail against the teachers unions for demanding unreasonably high teacher salaries. These are also the same people who believe that if they home or private school their children, then they shouldn't have to pay any taxes to fund public schools. Their pro-god/anti-tax/anti-teacher agenda has had a disastrous impact on the quality of our public schools, and they don't deserve a voice in the discussion of school safety. Their members created a lot of the conditions that got us where we are.

These are the same people that are now spouting at any opportunity that if only our teachers were armed, then this sort of thing wouldn't happen. They want to train our teachers to basically carry out Stand Your Ground in schools. And now the official stance is to put an armed cop in every school, who is going to magically guard every entrance/exit, and will keep an entire school safe by being some sort of wild west superhero badass. I think they've been watching too many of the same hollywood action flicks they conveniently blame for making kids violent.

Another idea the NRA is promoting is the creation of a national database of Americans who have had mental health issues. Anyone ever seen the level of vitriol that comes out when there is talk of a national database of gun owners? They will scream and shout all day long about that being a deep violation of their rights, and will tell you that such an idea only proves that the citizens need to be armed to protect themselves from our government.

These assholes don't get to be involved in our public safety discussions. They and the agenda they push are the root of all of our public safety issues.
