Started this WhiteHouse.gov petition. 25,000 sigs needed in 30 days for it to be reviewed by the White House.
The Westboro Baptist Church regularly engages in hateful protests
("Thank god for dead soldiers", "God hates fags",
"God sent the shooter" (Sandy Hook). They do this by hiding behind
claims of free speech, religious freedom, and lawsuits.
They are touchy to confront (lawsuits) but if there was precedence for
"free speech zones" outside of President Bush's appearances,
for national policy issues, of all things, there certainly can be a policy
for a half-mile "zone of respect" around funerals where people can
be allowed to grieve in peace, while not restricting the WBC's right to
free speech or freedom to practice religion.

If that's the standard, why not just water-board the Westboro people?

(184 posts)3. While I agree with the sentiment and despise the vile gasbag assholes that
are Westboro Baptist Church.. we simply can not do this. In fact, I believe something similar has been tried and struck down.
I hate those fuckers with an absolute passion!

They won't be around forever - as soon as Fred Phelps dies, so will his family from shock when they discover the huge cache of hardcore gay porn he undoubtedly has in his bedroom.
