In a parallel way, if Barack Obama loses his progressive base, then we have lost the next election and any chance of taking back the US Congress.
Whether or not he realizes it, this is a bellweather moment for his Presidency. It is not wise to lightly toss about suggestions about cutting SS or breaking promises about letting the Bush tax cuts expire. Progressives weigh those words very carefully.
