FIRED UP, READY TO GO
--
At the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, we did a cross-check of the two lists and found that 97 sitting and voting Members (we excluded non-voting delegates) of the House Democratic caucus have signed onto statements either last year or this year saying they would not vote for legislation that uses chained CPI to cut benefits. Thats a majority of the caucus, which includes 191 members.

(6,234 posts)Sadly, thanks to Obama, cutting Social Security is now always on the table. Even so-called radical leftists like Obama agree it needs to be slashed. Which means it is going to happen.

The momentum is on our side.
Your move, Obama.

(594 posts)if the chained cpi is not put into effect. Obama wants to cut social security--and that's that. Christmas has already been ruined by a number of things, and now a Democratic President wanting to cut Social Security has made having Christmas here unlikely.

(6,852 posts)In 2041 we will only be able to pay out 75 cents on the dollar of current benefits. What will everyone say then. If we do nothing there will be major benefits cuts. There a far fewer workers paying into the fund per retired person when the system started.
I want to see social security for people of my generation (I am only 25)
I am not saying chained CPI is the answer. I don't have an answer. But something needs to be done.
Not now though. The President offered a compromise the speaker refused. Now we throw the GOP an anchor.
Keep this in your head.
The top 1% is sitting on a huge pile of cash.
Someone had a great proposal the other day. Tie a corporate tax rate directly to unemployment rates. You will get plenty of witholding.

(45,319 posts)at 200K. If you are worried about funding the program, bring money into the program by lifting or ending the cap, as Obama suggested many times as candidate. It's a snap, we could have excess, higher benefits, the works.

(661 posts)We have decades to do it. No need to cut benefits.

(16,993 posts)Over $2.5 Trillion, last I heard.
Congress borrows money from SS to pay for wars, then reduces benefits because SS is in trouble!
socialist_n_TN
(11,481 posts)Those tax cuts were paid for by the SS Trust Fund. I believe I read that's where MOST of the money went actually.

(9,893 posts)but at a reduced rate, say 3% for the worker and 3% for the employer.
The AFA puts a Medicare tax on capital gains. I believe that it is about 3.5%.
Why not do that for SS?
Or how about a 2-3% SS tax on estates over $2 mil or so.
I'd really like you to have SS to fall back on when you're old. I don't think that it is fair for people within hailing distance of retirement like me (57) to take your money if a solid plan isn't in place for you to get something, too.

(22,913 posts)Arm twisting has changed positions in the past and it could again. Then there is always the argument that "we are faced with a changed situation from a year ago" that can be used for backpeddling. Don't get me wrong, this is very encouraging, just not a slam dunk that those positions will hold (without further pressure from their districts).
