and when it comes down to it, they're all guesses.

One thing is certain mathematically. If inflation is very low, or non-existent, then the difference between chained CPI and CPI as calculated today is minimal. Clearly, the higher inflation is, the more the difference between the two.

However, what would produce high inflation? A rip-roaring economy, that's what. And that's Social Security's very best hope for survival for another generation. Permanent, dragged out recession of the kind we've experienced since 2008 will produce low-or-no inflation that has the effect described on the two CPI calculations.

In the long run, which one really is better for seniors?
