Principal: Well, being a neighborhood watchman is certainly a plus, Mr. Zimmerman. So, tell me why you want to be an armed guard at our school"

(16,350 posts)I can just imagine the trigger-happy video gamer, playing all nice and low key, saying he loves little kids, etc....
And if a guard shoots someone before they shoot a student, at what point is that legal? If an irate parent comes in and screams at the principal, they risk being shot. If a student mouths off at faculty, they risk getting shot. Forget corporal punishment. We are looking at capital punishment! It might be rare, but if we keep arming people to protect themselves, there will be more preventable deaths, not fewer.

(20,176 posts)as much as I'm not in favor of this proposal at-all...if it were to be, to come to pass...I'd be strongly-advocating that it be done under a federal administration (as opposed to local or state and definitely not open to private contracts. Think air marshals.) and that a very high bar were to be imposed in favor of hiring veterans.
I don't want a gun in my cousins' schools...but if there is going to be, I want it in the hands of someone who has seen combat and police-action...or I want it in the hands of a LEO...who is trained and drilled regularly for that specific role to a very-high degree.
I don't think there's a Zimmerman-type wahoo that meets my requirements.
