Want a heavily armed cop in every school? Okay, how about a 30% tax on every gun sale to pay for it

If people start suggesting this, I have a feeling it will shut the NRA's plan down very fast.

But I don't understand why it should. Conservatives have always favored USER FEES, rather than general income taxes to pay for programs. That was the whole idea behind shifting the burden of Social Security to the Payroll Tax.

So...why not a surcharge/sales tax on GUNS to pay for extra police officers and security guards to help control the violence they create?

Or, how about a little 'choice architecture' by offering the gun lobby a choice:

A) A 30% surcharge on every gun sale to pay for extra police and security guards. (Payable to the STATE rather than Federal Government, just to avoid the usual 'federal overreach' rhetoric.)

or

B) Bring in laws for i) mandatory criminal record and history of mental illness checks before purchase, ii) an state wide gun registry (which the FBI has access to), and iii) a ban on third party sales (you're not allowed to re-sell your gun to a crook five minutes after buying it).

The public would go for this. And, given a choice between A TAX to help clean up their mess, or SENSIBLE GUN LAWS to avoid their mess in the first place, I think the Gun Lobby will support B.

ie-illegal to convert a semi-auto to full auto (which is easy), and rules against sawing off a shotgun so that it can be more easily concealed.
