NRA Proposal - a quick and dirty cost estimate

98,817 schools
http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=84

http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=tp&tid=71
There are 461,000 sworn officers
Overall, local police operating costs for fiscal year 2007 were $116,500 per sworn officer

Total cost: $11.5 billion/year!

I know the NRA thinks this could be done with $8/hr rent-a-cops, but that is because they are delusional if they think that anyone without full training could handle this kind of situation.

Edit - with 14 million new gun sales each year, it would take a tax of $821/gun to pay for this. Let's see how much they like that idea!

I was thinking about $100K and 100K schools. I would propose taxing ammo to pay for it. What do you think?

Yes I would want $8/hr armed rent-a-cops around my kids (not).

The U.S. Treasury Department, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau reported an estimated 12 billion rounds of ammunition were purchased between November 2008 and November 2009, compared to the average 7 to 10 billion rounds of ammunition purchased annually.
