I think we're missing the point here. As the gun nuts are fond of pointing out, every time somebody proposes a ban on the sale of certain types of weapons, the crazies buy them up like hotcakes before any potential ban can kick in.
It's futile to try and stop people from having certain types of weapons by banning their manufacture. Although, obviously some types of weapons should be banned. But that won't solve the problem.
What we need is a national GUN PERMIT program. (Administered by the States, to avoid all the whining about the big, bad bureaucrats in Washington taking peoples' guns away.)
Here's how it works:
You can only own (or CARRY) a gun if you have a permit, and you can't GET a permit unless you have no criminal record or history of mental illness.
Case closed.
The law and order people should LOVE this, and so should the law enforcement professionals. Most criminals get their guns from third party (straw purchasers) who bought them legally and then retailed them to crooks. A permit law would mean that all you'd have to do is FIND a gun on a known criminal and you can lock them up.
I know that some states and cities used to do this. Do they still do it in some States, or did the Supreme Court strike all of those laws down?

And if you are not eligible to have a gun and you are caught with one, bad things are supposed to happen.
Its not just straw purchases, its theft too.
Those are some of several things I would like to see addressed

(5,954 posts)a criminal background check, and check for history of mental illness before being issued a permit.
I think in some states you don't need a permit at all, and in some all you have to do is apply for a permit, but it doesn't require the background check to get it.
There are no national standards for issuing carry permits that I know of, but I could be totally wrong about that.
Can you cite a federal law? Thanks!
