(10,252 posts)and take that sucker over. Run the current board off and refocus the NRA for hunters and sportsmen, not a whore lobby group for gun manufacturers. NRA, ya know Nat'l Rifle Asso. Rifle, as in shoot deer and wild boar, hunt elk, moose, etc.
Change the discussion from "gun control" to "assault weapon control." There is good reason for any civilian to own an assault weapon or extended bullet clips.

(16,350 posts)Most of the members are in favor of some reasonable gun safety measures. The NRA does not listen to them. But the dues money is used to intimidate and buy politicians. How I wish we could all join the NRA and change it from within. I would do it if it had any chance of working.

(11,519 posts)I don't know the inner workings of that organization, but most I've been associated with have a yearly election where they rubber-stamp the pre-selected officers and board of directors. Some organizations have directors which serve multi-year terms so it would probably be a lengthy process to take them over, but in theory it's doable.

(10,252 posts)To be a voting member, you must either pay $1000 to be a lifetime member, or have been a regular member ($35/yr) for 5 straight years. I can't afford the $1000; I'm retired and live on SSI. But some of the younger DU members here should seriously consider joining.

(11,519 posts)I guess, just like all good right-wingers, they cover their asses when it comes to elections. This is just exactly like all the rigged congressional districts.
They certainly did a bang-up job of making sure they retain power.

(13,877 posts)Part of the bylaws would include interfacing with local, state and federal government, at least at the advisory level, around a 21st Century policy on weapons and the public welfare, now that we've outgrown muskets, the pony express and shootouts at the OK Corral.
After that PR debacle with La Pierre, I'm betting there is some talk. It will take bright, talented, determined and powerful people to pull it off, but I'm sure the talent is there.

(478 posts)Better still, let's borrow from the Republican playbook against abortion.
The Republicans want to make every woman, before she has an abortion, see videos and ultrasounds.
They want to make a woman have a waiting period and go through counseling.
Make every person wanting a gun watch videos of the young children, killed by guns, being buried.
Make them watch the gun violence, the needless loss of innocent lives, the horror of it all.
Make every person wanting a gun have a waiting period and go through counseling.

(12,816 posts)That's an excellent idea. Even people getting a food handler's permit have to be instructed in what happens if they do things improperly.

(13,877 posts)and S.O.B. too, now that I think of it. I think, like the returning war dead, there could be a photo made to represent the 20 little caskets, the 6 adults and the Mom. Yes, the Mom. My other posts discuss that.
Somebody could do that with photoshop, maybe? The photos alive which are out on the internet...and the name and the corresponding caskets with flowers. Yes.
It was the photo of the Mai Lay Vietnamese girl, screaming and naked burning with napalm that many think was the tipping point in the Vietnam War. One photo...even though I believed that they allowed ONE when they wanted to ratchet down the war, and it gave them an excuse. But that was then.
