Sen. Joe Manchin op/Ed written with NRA?

Manchin, after a shameful and cowardly about-face on gun control, published an opinion piece in the Washington Post on Friday. In it he, he references the NRAs plan to arm schools, which he says he is open to. He also notes that the proposal was put forth, past tense, in the NRA press conference. But the Post piece was published Friday, same day as the NRA faux "press" conference.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the timing and his reference indicate that they gave him advance word and helped him craft a response as part of their PR strategy? After they refused comment, then denied press questions, it's pretty disgusting to have this Democratic senator working in their private PR releases before they even had the courage to speak up for themselves. Am I wrong about the timing?

I don't mean this in a conspiracy way, just that it's clear he's getting fed material and that's his chief concern seems to be providing them cover, . That's the real argument of his piece anyway.

Sounds like they collaborated. But either way, he's an asshole. MotherPetrie Dec 2012 #1
