I am.
I've got handguns, including automatics, and I'm ready to give them up as part of a national movement to dramatically reduce gun ownership.
As a matter of public safety, they clearly do more harm than good.

(5,417 posts)Nobody wants to see a single innocent person killed. The difference is, many people who are pro gun don't believe that feel good measures accomplish anything except disarm honest people. If the AWB was the answer, why were there shootings durring the AWB. The fact is criminals will always have guns. They are not going to turn them in just because its illegal.

(67 posts)I had a handgun for a while following a middle-of-the-night break-in that ended in abduction and rape. It made me feel more in control on sleepless nights to be able to sit in bed and point the gun at my bedroom door. But that was the first wave of PTSD talking, and it wasn't a healthy perspective to continue. Sitting up with a gun certainly didn't help me learn to sleep again, and having a weapon that wasn't loaded and aimed didn't make me feel more in control.
I realized I would rather deal with my fear directly than pretend a gun in the house made me safe. It wouldn't have helped anyway on the night in question because I woke up with a knife at my throat and someone much stronger already pinning me down.
I do feel more secure with a dog in the house, just because I wouldn't be caught asleep again.

(16,350 posts)A 3 year old kid, dead. I bet that Grandpa once felt as sure as you do about the wisdom of having such a thing in his home. I feel for the kids with relatives who have firearms. It's really not fair. Make sure you at least warn parents, etc., so they can decide whether to enter a dangerous place or not. You owe them that courtesy.

(17,045 posts)that my Dad gave to me when I left for college many years ago ( my age is showing ) . At the time I was moving away from home to a big city and he gave it to me for protection.
It came in a box and it's been in that box unloaded for over twenty years. I don't even have bullets. It's hidden away and I sometimes forget that I even have it. I am sure the box has a fine layer of dust on it!
I've thought about it alot lately in light of this tragedy and I think I need to just go and turn it in, but I don't know where. Do i just go to the local police station?

(7,720 posts)How can a bill banning firearms be written without usinlng specific terms?
By the way, no assault rifles have been used in crime for many years. And rifles of any kind arw used in fewer than 4% of gun homicides. If I thought giving up the 2 shotguns, 4 rifles, and 2 handguns that I own would save anyone from dying I would give them up in a heartbeat.
It seems that everyone on this thread 'gave up' their guns by selling them? How does that reduce gun ownership in any meaningful way?

(11,443 posts)because I live out in the boonies and use them to kill poisonous snakes, pepper deer with bird shot to scare them out of the garden, scare off wild dogs or coyotes, and as protection (911response takes 15-20 minutes). Anyway, they were inherited from my father and nothing more than a couple of old shotguns and a 38 Smith & Wesson revolver. The double barrel shotgun is 120 years old.

(13,992 posts)I have hunting rifles that see use 4-5 times a year. Hunting season and a few times for target practice. If there was a secured location (particularly one with a target range, I would absolutely sign my guns over to them -- with the proviso that I can check them out for hunting season.

(1,418 posts)there has to be a technical word for Americans who can't face simple reality, who when faced with a serious problem, swing from one extreme to the other as "the answer".
Given our nation and congress is chock full-O' gun nuts, we're not going to get rid of our 300 million guns-- nor should we have to when there are much better, more common sense answers. so let's STOP wasting time on "getting rid of ALL guns'.
The answer involves several, well coordinated, comprehensive efforts:
1.) Much more mental health care/monitoring of students to determine who has a problem and a plan to deal with the problem-- not for a few months, but for the entire time the student is in school. Bullying of gay or "different" kids must stop. there must be a zero tolerance policy for this, including stiff fines for parents who don't stop their bully kids. I'm tired of idiot parents who think this is amusing and it's OK for their kids to be bullies.
2.) Much better school security systems, including identifying who is driving up to a school, parking there (or nearby), why are they there, etc. Video surveiilance has to be part of this. Think schools can't afford this? BULLsh**; tell it to congress who just spent $2 Trillion on two worthless wars of choice. Time to priortitize how our money is spent.
3.) Ban the purchase of guns/ammo/gear without registration & permit at gun shows.
4.) Much stricter laws, and a long waiting period for those wanting to purchase semi-automatic weapons. I'd be in favor of making the
permit fees for these weapons much more expensive.
5.) ban large capacity magazines/clips.
Failure to make these changes means the absurd slaughter will continue in our nation.
