Air Force to provide funeral honors to Ashli Babbitt

https://thehill.com/policy/defense/5474030-air-force-to-provide-funeral-honors-to-ashli-babbitt/

The U.S. Air Force will provide Jan. 6 rioter Ashli Babbitt with military funeral honors, reversing a Biden-era decision that denied her family’s request, according to a legal group that has represented her family.

Judicial Watch, the conservative legal group, on Wednesday made public a letter from Under Secretary of the Air Force Matthew Lohmeier, extending an offer to allow the special funeral procedures to take place.

“I understand that the family’s initial request was denied by Air Force leadership in a letter dated February 9, 2021,” Lohmeier wrote in the Aug. 15 letter shared by Judicial Watch. “However, after reviewing the circumstances of Ashli’s death, and considering the information that has come forward since then, I am persuaded that the previous determination was incorrect.”

He additionally extended an invitation to her mother and husband to meet him at the Pentagon, so he may offer his condolences.

The Hill requested comment from the Pentagon regarding the veracity of the letter.

I have seen all of this since before he won the first time.

Knew they country was stupid enough to choose the most immoral and corrupt person imaginable over a decent, highly competent public servant and that is if he lost he would not leave normally, they kind of half assed it and fell short.

Knew he would run again and likely win, cause this country is just that fckn stupid, that they would not half ass things this time and things are where I thought they would be now.

One of my neighbors posted on FB about how we all need to fight back in January, and I posted that the country was rolling over him, that we lost the war over time going back decades of indulging republican lunacy. Some people jumped on me at the time.

Walking the dog last week, she said, I so wish you weren't right ...

I am a veteran and we swore an oath to defend the constitution. She violated that oath when she stormed the capital and took part in trying to change the outcome of an election when their was no evidence of fraud. If you saw the video she was told to stay back. She did not comply and was going through the window when she was shot. This is so insulting to the police she and her so called patriots they beat up that day.

She is a traitor to her oath.

With Trump pardoning everyone arrested for Jan 6th and now this is similar to what the Nazis did with the people killed during the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. Hitler and the Nazis tried to overthrow the government a few Nazis were killed. When Hitler came into power those people had memorials made out to them.

It is sickening

She attempted to break into a room of Congressional lawmakers who had been evacuated because the Capitol had been overrun.

Try jumping the fence at the White House and see how that ends up for you.

How the hell is that "determination" incorrect?

Specialist Vanessa Guillén, US Army (deceased, murdered, likely by a fellow soldier). She is no more Mexican than Trump's grandfather, Frederick the Great Draft Dodger. Ms. Guillén was born a citizen of the United States. And she died an American, while serving our country.

Trump: ‘I Need the Kind of Generals That Hitler Had’

The Republican nominee’s preoccupation with dictators, and his disdain for the American military, is deepening.

By Jeffrey Goldberg
The Atlantic, October 22, 2024

In April 2020, Vanessa Guillén, a 20-year-old Army private, was bludgeoned to death by a fellow soldier at Fort Hood, in Texas. The killer, aided by his girlfriend, burned Guillén’s body. Guillén’s remains were discovered two months later, buried in a riverbank near the base, after a massive search.

Guillén, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, grew up in Houston, and her murder sparked outrage across Texas and beyond. Fort Hood had become known as a particularly perilous assignment for female soldiers, and members of Congress took up the cause of reform. Shortly after her remains were discovered, President Donald Trump himself invited the Guillén family to the White House. With Guillén’s mother seated beside him, Trump spent 25 minutes with the family as television cameras recorded the scene.

In the meeting, Trump maintained a dignified posture and expressed sympathy to Guillén’s mother. “I saw what happened to your daughter Vanessa, who was a spectacular person, and respected and loved by everybody, including in the military,” Trump said. Later in the conversation, he made a promise: “If I can help you out with the funeral, I’ll help—I’ll help you with that,” he said. “I’ll help you out. Financially, I’ll help you.”

Snip...

According to attendees, and to contemporaneous notes of the meeting taken by a participant, an aide answered: Yes, we received a bill; the funeral cost $60,000.

Trump became angry. “It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks to bury a fucking Mexican!” He turned to his chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and issued an order: “Don’t pay it!” Later that day, he was still agitated. “Can you believe it?” he said, according to a witness. “Fucking people, trying to rip me off.”

U.S. military funerals are traditionally reserved for actual heroes, not insurrectionists who attacked their own country’s capitol.

Why the scheduled military funeral for Jan. 6 rioter Ashli Babbitt is indefensible - MSNBC

apple.news/ALS7elVXxR22...

(@oc88.bsky.social) 2025-08-29T20:10:30.606Z

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/scheduled-military-funeral-jan-6-rioter-ashli-babbitt-indefensible-rcna228089

It was a few months ago when Donald Trump’s Justice Department reached a settlement with the family of Ashli Babbitt, the Jan. 6 rioter who was fatally shot by a police officer during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. As part of the agreement, the Republican administration announced plans to give roughly $5 million to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Babbitt’s relatives.

While this was impossible to defend given the weakness of the case — Thomas Manger, the outgoing chief of the U.S. Capitol Police, condemned the payment in no uncertain terms — it apparently was just part of a larger effort. As my MSNBC colleague Ja’han Jones explained:

The U.S. Air Force is planning to offer an official military funeral for deceased insurrectionist Ashli Babbitt, who was shot during the attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to documents released by a conservative nonprofit.

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, a war veteran who’s now estranged from the Republican Party, said in response to the news: “While her death is absolutely tragic and I wish it hadn’t happened, the Air Force giving her honors is in itself a dishonor.”.....

But in June 2021, Trump said that he saw Babbitt as an ally who was on his “side.” A month later, he said the rioter was “innocent.” A month after that, he accused the officer who shot her of being a “murderer.” In 2023, Trump condemned the cop as a “thug” and a “coward” who deserved to be vilified, and earlier this year, he inexplicably claimed that Babbitt was “shot for no reason whatsoever.”

Two months later, Trump claimed that Babbitt “was innocently standing there” and had possibly even tried to help law enforcement by “trying to sort of hold back the crowd” when she was shot.

It was as odious a lie as the president has ever told.

Nevertheless, it’s against this backdrop that his administration isn’t just giving Babbitt’s family millions of dollars, it’s also giving Babbitt a military funeral — traditionally reserved for actual heroes, not insurrectionists who attacked their own country’s capitol.
