Do you feel extreme anxiety when you walk in your neighorhood or go for a drive in your car?

...I took my 40-something year-old to work twice this week, and we talked along the way about how, years back, he'd been profiled and actually thrown to the ground by local police on the cute public paths that our community provides for joggers, hikers, and everyone else in the community to take advantage of in a sort of utopian, suburban experience that's apparently only reserved for the white people who do whatever they please on the path without being accosted.

His skin color is the only explanation for them repeatedly harassing and attacking my son hurrying with his backpack on his way to work, and, apparently they never gave him anything but a hard time in the way of explanation.

So we're driving and it's really something that he's talking about this against the very moment that I'm in the midst of an anxiety attack over a random thought I just had that we both looked like foreign laborers in my old Ford truck; and what if...?

I looked into the mirror and took a few seconds to get my head around what I was actually looking for - and there it was - I looked, for all the world like a foreign worker with my ragged cap, and then down to my ragged garden clothes I'd just kept on for the short drive; and my boy looked like one of my crew.

I'm not some shrinking violet. I can defend myself and my son against aggressive cops profiling us and pulling us over, as I have several times in the past when they were young.

But I'm human and I'm sometimes fragile, and, dammit to hell, I expect to be able to travel without feeling like a target for overzealous cops looking for a black or brown person to kick around - like we used to feel when we were young and actual targets for drug wars directed by police against the citizenry; harassment using the pretext of suspected pot use to devastate young lives.

Have you ever continuously felt like a police target when you walk in your own neighborhood or travel? Check the news about how the Supreme Court just decided, without much explanation, that ICE cops can continue to target people based on their physical attributes and the inflection of their speech.

I feel like this country has it's boot on my family's head; not just the government, but the people of this country who enabled and tolerate these abuses of humanity, decency, and law.

You ever felt like that?

It's wrong. It exists. As a white person I attest to having witnessed other white people treat Black people badly and speak badly about them.

It's wrong. It's up to all of us to stop it. We can't turn our heads and pretend we don't see.

We must constantly suppress our anger and we always fear for our children and those that look like them. They are not picking up white folks on the street and stripping them of their rights. Do you fear being shipped to alligator Alcatraz or some place in Africa? They get off on bullying minorities , there is no white similarity.

actually a LOT like dogs in many ways which may explain in part why dogs and bears really, honestly, do not like each other at all. I have had one, ostensibly ordinary Montana housecat that would chase the damn bears into the forest if she got out. It was the only time she ever tried to get out, when she smelled a bear.

But that’s not your question. Can the bear break the glass? Absolutely, but that is only slightly more likely to happen to my house than it is to be hit by debris from air travel or space. Bears are smart. Very, very smart. They are pretty good at avoiding trouble. Breaking a window is likely to bring some fairly big trouble, and they seem to know this. Only a very desperate or ill bear is likely to go looking for an encounter with humans or breaking glass in an erea clearly inhabited by humans and companion animals.

I’m white, but I think a lot about how terrified the Hispanic community must be all the time now. What scared me today is that someone posted a picture on NextDoor of a military tank with a gunner on top at an intersection in Fairfax that I go through all the time. I was stunned. No idea where it came from or where it was going. What is happening to our country?

Never been targeted for my color. That said, I have been doubted/snickered at/accused of lying by officers responding to an assault; my bruises and missing teeth and blood-splattered clothing did nothing to assuage their suspicion that I had somehow caused my assailant's actions. Beyond that experience, I have worked in settings (mainly restaurants and nightclubs) where I was essentially reprimanded for failing to anticipate being routinely manhandled; one of my co-workers was issued a warning for slapping a customer who grabbed her every time she walked by his table. There was an attitude that our 'complaints' were just a waste of the officers' time. And because of that one very violent assault I am still very careful about where I am in a roomful of people, I keep an eye on the doors to see who's coming in. If I'm leaving a store after dark, I will sometimes ask for someone to walk me to my car. I consciously give myself permission to do what I must to feel safe.

I've had this conversation with a retired police officer who acknowledged that he had seen that attitude way too often. It's sad, because in other situations the officers have been very courteous and helpful. And none of the men in my family and circle of friends has ever had to have that conversation with themselves.

My anxiety always goes up a notch when I run into toopid people. And believe me, they're everywhere. Especially the ones behind the wheel who think they are kings of the road. Every day I go out I run into at least 1 of them. Once you're outside your car, another realm of toopid people arise. It's insane how many idiots I see on a daily basis.

has so far been driving West through Westwood on Wilshire one night and having a cruiser pull from beside me to behind me. They weren't tailing me. They were tailgating me so this wasn't about any kind of suspicion. The clearest explanation is that they were trying to goad me into an emotional response. I stayed cool and they eventually tried to cause trouble elsewhere.

This only went for about the equivalent of a couple city blocks or less. It may not seem like a lot, but it feels very different in real time.

There are many interesting stories out there if you open up. I always mention my degree in Anthropology and my interest in all cultures. That seems to open people up.

I cannot figure out why ANY and ALL minorities in America didn't turn out in force and vote for Biden/Dems.............

And I gotta believe, the Republicans have FINALLY figured out ways to prevent democratic voting, EVER AGAIN, like in all Tyrant controlled countries around the world. Just look at Putin/Russia, he always gets 85% of the votes, because the votes are all COUNTED by his administration.........

And I can only imagine with all of Putin's tampering with U.S. elections, including 2016, that he showed the Republicans exactly how he does it & Musk probably instituted it in the vote counting in the 2024 election....esp in the swing states.............

As a woman who has been assaulted more than once, I know fear, but this anxiety is awful. I saw a guy jump out of an ambulance today who looked Hispanic and wondered if he was refusing medical treatment because he would have to worry about being kidnapped and in physical danger from no medical treatment if the hospital reported him and ice took him away. It's horrible.

I was like ohhh... 😑 States "Rights", right? We know you want the "right" to continue harassing Black people. It was I believe, the first stop in his '80 Campaign.

What I didn't know was that that's where the infamous murders of the 3 Civil Rights worker was. I totally knew about it just not the location. I would have thought Mississippi (back then considered the worst, with probably Alabama close behind). [I do know The North was never exempt from racism either.] His first stop, his subject matter - geeebbzzzz, what did that tell people!

While there's the famous painting by Norman Rockwell of the young brave Black girl being escorted into the white school being guarded by officials that many people know; he actually did (which I didn't know until about 20 yrs ago) a painting about the CR workers' murders. Well done while evoking the full terror of those brave young men. A very visceral reminder, and chillingly contemporary with Trump's penchant for invoking cruelty, violence, and not speaking out enough against Nazis, Proud Boys, and when the KKK rears it's ugly head.
I do fear for more again our Black & and other POCs citizens because of his monstrosities.

Now I have time.
I'm so sorry your son experienced such violent police response. And in general for both of you driving around, or walking around in your neighborhood, or elsewhere to being watched by racist white people, and other previous nasty encounters with police.
A scary "revelation" recently seeing yourself, and your son in your truck's mirror.

On occasion, walking around as a woman can feel creepy.

Back to you. I've done/do my best to be aware of police abuses of Black people, and other POCs. So far, until this immigration stuff, Black folks have gotten the worse. Read about it quite further back, later on line (definitely a lot of years before George Floyd), then videos even in recent years. I could certainly cite a bunch of these. I have a still good memory for the good, and the bad.

And how worse it's gotten with Trump's permissions to racists, Nazis etc!
I made sure I voted early in 2020, 2024 so nothing if things went wrong (an accident, family emergency) that would have prevented me from getting to vote on Election Day.

I blame all who didn't vote for VP for any reason. They knew what he was like from term 1!

I vote, I call, sometimes speak out, I write emails to try and make this a better cointry in general, for the vulnerable, and those never granted first class citizenship in the first place.

To (somehow) a better USA (and World)!
Stay safe!

Let me explain. I live in South Carolina. It’s a very red, red red state. I am not concerned about myself. I am an older, white, retired male in a “world” of older, white retired males, but I have many young, Hispanic, hard working, family supporting, men and women who are subjected to the possibility of being pounced on by ICE and other NAZI shit down here. When I am at my out of the way coffee shop, I see the worry and the anxiety on their faces when sheriff or other official looking black SUVs and car pull in. There have been several ICE raids in our area, so I understand why the are scared.

Vote please… let’s get some power back in the Democrats hands.
