Why? Because DC is run by lobbyists. Many of those lobbyists belong to the insurance companies. Companies that exist no where else in the world.

To where they’re perceived to be too big to fail. Just look at United healthcare. It has a market cap of over $300 billion. Even after all the bad practices, it got a huge investment from Berkshire because its cash flow is still so insane and it was still seen as having a lot of “value”. What that value is to either the doctor or the patient, I have no idea, but the monstrosity makes a lot of money.

The closest we got to anything resembling universal healthcare during the Obama care negotiations was the public option which was shot down by Lieberman and Baucus, both receiving a lot of money from healthcare and pharmaceutical companies.

... than the cost or effectiveness of the health care they are selling.

That's why we have the most expensive health care in the world which is mediocre at best, even for the wealthy.

It’s mind boggling how corrupt our crony capitalist system is.

When health care is not tied to employment, it encourages people to start their own businesses. Small businesses don't have to choose between offering prospective employees a competitive wage or a health insurance package. People don't have to defer health care because they can't afford it, leading to more sickness, more absenteeism, and decreased production.

People love to deride France's laid-back work culture, and long, out-of-the-office lunches. But the World Health Organization dubbed France's the most productive workforce in the world. But try to get American CEO's with their "you need to work harder for my wealth" worldview to understand that.
