Not ONE U.S. troop should be sacrificed or put at risk to get that airbase back.
Trump's Dream of Retaking Bagram Might End up Looking Like an Afghan Re-Invasion, Sources Say
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump's goal of re-occupying Bagram air base in Afghanistan might end up looking like a re-invasion of the country, requiring more than 10,000 troops as well as deployment of advanced air defenses, current and former U.S. officials say. (quadruple that)
Trump, speaking to reporters on Thursday during a trip to London, said "we want that base back" and cited what he called its strategic location near China.
"It's an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons," Trump said.
He hinted on Thursday that the U.S. could acquire the base with some kind of Taliban consent but it was unclear what form such an agreement might take. It would be a remarkable turnaround for the Taliban, which fought to expel U.S. troops and retake the country from a U.S.-backed government.

...this is another one of the idiot things Trump says which can't be done, and most likely won't be done, just to set people's hair on fire.
But, for shit sakes, this fucker.

(9,592 posts)In WWII, two large refineries that supplied oil to the allies in Europe and Africa were on Aruba (Lago Colony/Standard Oil of New Jersey) and Curaçao (Shell Oil) in the Dutch Antilles off the coast of Venezuela. The refineries were so important that Germany attacked Lago Colony and failed.
Lago Colony Aruba History WWII History
The Lago Colony, Aruba, played a significant role during World War II. The Lago Oil & Transport Company refinery was one of the largest in the world, producing high-octane gasoline for the British war effort. The refinery's production was vital for the Allied war effort, and the island became a strategic target for German U-boats. The Lago refinery was attacked on February 16, 1942, by the German submarine U-156, resulting in the sinking of several oil tankers. The Lago refinery sustained minimal damage but was a significant target for the German campaign to disrupt oil supplies to the Allies in the Caribbean. The Lago refinery's production and the island's strategic importance in the war highlight the impact of Aruba's oil industry on its history and culture

(1,601 posts)Even his spineless GOP patsies in Congress would be saying fuck no on that. However, he may be trying to get the Taliban to give it back in exchange for aid. Not sure how I feel about that, but we did occupy it for many many years before, even during his first term, so probably meh as long as nobody gets unalived. But all he really wants is to feel like he's undoing everything Biden did, or doing things 'better'. Obama too. He's a giant man baby and pathological narcissist. There's probably not a single General recommending this action.
Also, I call bullshit on the entire Chinese weapons thing. I think what he want is for the US to be set up to either side of Iran (the other side being Kuwait, Iraq, KSA, and Oman, at least one or two of which would let the US stage from there).
Here's what AI said about his claim:
A modern fighter jet (like an F-16, F-35, or similar Chinese jet) typically cruises at speeds between Mach 1 and Mach 2 (approximately 1,2002,400 km/h). At these speeds, it could theoretically cover 2,000 km in around one hour, under ideal, direct conditions without accounting for airspace restrictions, aerial refueling, or military operational realities.
Bottom line:
Trump's "an hour away" remark only makes sense when referring to the possible flight time of a supersonic military aircraft, not the physical proximity by car or conventional means. Overland or by subsonic craft, it would take much longer. In practical terms, even with a fighter jet, this would require complex operations due to international borders, air defense, and logistical factors. But in pure flight time, yes, it is about an hour for a modern fighter jet
So to give perspective, Minneapolis is "an hour away" from Phoenix by Trump's definition.

(170,058 posts)The president says he wants to reclaim a former U.S. base in Afghanistan. The Taliban apparently has different ideas.
As Trump talks about reclaiming a former U.S. base in Afghanistan, spare a thought for the voters who convinced themselves that Trump was the candidate of foreign policy restraint and isolationism.

Years later, Trump is back in the White House, and hes still talking about going back into Afghanistan. NBC News reported:
Trump said that the U.S. was trying to get back Bagram Airbase, a former U.S. military base in Afghanistan. He did not provide details or what it would mean for U.S. troops, who left Afghanistan in 2021 during a widely criticized withdrawal.
Speaking to reporters at an event in England, Trump said of Bagram, Were trying to get it back, by the way. OK, that could be a little breaking news. Were trying to get it back, because they need things from us. We want that base back.
He didnt appear to be kidding.
Trump: Bagram, one of the biggest air bases, we gave to them for nothing. We are trying to get it back, that could be breaking news. They need things from us.
— Acyn (@acyn.bsky.social) 2025-09-18T18:55:57.993Z
The Taliban, for what its worth, made clear soon after that its not willing to return the base to American control, and its difficult to imagine the White House changing Taliban leaders minds.
.....Five years later, however, Trump has launched deadly military strikes on civilian boats in international waters. And launched preemptive military strikes on targets in Iran. And initiated a bombing campaign in Yemen. And announced his desire to annex Canada, Greenland, the Panama Canal and the Gaza Strip. And directed the Pentagon to target drug cartels in Mexico.
And is now once again focusing on Afghanistan.
If you voted for Trump because you expected restraint on foreign policy and the use of military force abroad, I have some awful news for you.

Trump on Saturday renewed his call to reestablish a U.S. presence at Bagram, even saying were talking now to Afghanistan about the matter. He did not offer further details about the purported conversations. Asked by a reporter if hed consider deploying U.S. troops to take the base, Trump demurred.
We wont talk about that, Trump said. We want it back, and we want it back right away. If they dont do it, youre going to find out what Im going to do.
On Sunday, chief Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected Trumps assertions and urged the U.S. to adopt a policy of realism and rationality.
