(6,069 posts)And Since Clinton, Democrats have been pretty much on board as well. NAFTA was going to be passed regardless of who won the 1992 election (I guess Perot was against it but he had no chance of winning).
And to be honest, a great deal of manufacturing jobs left the country. But many of those jobs left the country because we didn't have the workforce to fill them. Children of blue collar workers, like me, were told to go to college and avoid these jobs. Our parents worked these jobs but they hated them.
And while we hear of some manufacturing jobs returning to the US, we will never have level of manufacturing jobs that we had 60 years ago. Tariffs will do nothing but drive up prices. And ultimately lead to a recession.
I think a recession is what Trump wants. Authoritarianism works best when you have a hungry desperate population that clamors for crumbs. Also, a recession will allow the billionaires to buy up this country for pennies on the dollar.

Post-WWII Europe was in ruins; that was the main reason we were on top for a short time. The real crime is that postwar leaders never got their act together with any future planning, aka "industrial policy".
