No, not the people who have been killed by guns. Not their grieving families, either.
The poor, poor people who have to make arguments for why guns are not the problem are clearly the victims in all this.
Don't believe me? Just ask them.
Or better yet, just read DU.
Which hasn't resembled DU in a long, long time.
So many victims.

Constructive debate on the "gun control" issue jumped the shark here about three days after the Newton tragedy and nothing good has come out since, either pro or anti.
We cant agree on guns here, but I'd like to think that most of us can agree that the "gun debate" has been beaten to a pulp and the carcass of the same said horse has been pounded to a mush.

That's the point-of-view of the rabidly pro-gun crowd, for whom "constructive debate" means "bow down and worship the gun or die, infidel!"
For years, DU's gun stance has been INSANE. When Black communities vote to restrict gun ownership, DUers have moved to extreme right-wing arguments, overtly racist, because there's a dozen DUers for whom guns are the ultimate good, and anything that goes against their Faith is evil.
When white supremacists are shouting down everyone else on a liberal site, there's something very, very wrong.
Since Newtown, DU has VASTLY improved. The religious extremists have been put on the defensive, and liberals have been allowed to speak their minds -- which is the reverse of how it has been for years.

(23,147 posts)Sorry this doesn't fit with your gun owners as the top echelon of society meme, and that any talk of any controls at all on gun ownership make you uncomfortable, but maybe you should ask yourself why? Is it because your support of uncontrolled gun ownership trumps all and you can't take any resistance? Gun control debate has been totally lacking in this country for the past 16 years, but just a few weeks of debate over a totally heinous occurence and you are done? It's people like you that are causing this problem when you can't even handle a little talk. Why don't you go to the NRA website, or Drudge, it would probably be more in line with your thinking.

(39,343 posts)1. I do not hold to a meme that as a gun owner I am in the top echelon of society.
I've never said anything remotely close to this, can you read?
2. I am not uncomfortable with controls on gun ownership.
I have advocated a reinstatement of the previous AWB and a prohibition on high cap magazines.
3. I do not support uncontrollable gun ownership.
Seriously, I dont know how you know all these facts about me (none of which are true by the way)
4. Why the fuck you would think that I should be on the NRA or Drudge websites is even beyond me?
Where do you see any of your opinions about me in this post?
What I find extremely constructive are the over the top, hyperbolic anti gun (owner) threads...

Your post is what I am pointing to as not helping in the debate. All you did was name call and assign positions to me that I simply do not have and do not apply to me.
Thanks for playing, but FAIL

If sex offenders have to be on a public registry, then so should gun owners.

(21,977 posts)And you know I love you like a brother--no wait, my brothers are total assholes, and you're way better than that. There is NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE, I respect more on DU than you--but you're also better than name calling and posting snarky pics.
Knee-jerk reactions are almost always wrong, and you know that. Calling for the ban of all firearms is never going to fly. Not now. Probably not ever. All I'm asking for is some CIVIL DISCUSSION. I've expressed my position; I'm willing to support an assault weapons ban and hi-cap magazine ban (depending on the definition of hi-cap). BUT: The name-calling has got to stop, and you (more so than I, who has 1/100th of the clout you do here) can be instrumental in that. Yes, I totally agree that the NRA types are wrong, and Wayne LaPierre is a gun whore. But SOMEWHERE there's a middle ground. We need to be better than they are.
Again, you know I love you, my brother,

(21,977 posts)You want to take all the guns away. And I think you're dreaming. I own TWO guns. I own them for two reasons: one, self defense; two, I enjoy going to the range and shooting them at targets. Neither is illegal.
If you want to repeal the Second Amendment, go for it. I won't vote for it, and contrary to your wet dreams, neither will a majority of the voters. But jump on out there and go for it.
Now, if you want to come to my front porch and sit there all night, every night, come ahead. I live on the edge of a downtown urban nieghborhood. We've had break-ins that don't end well for the homeowners/residents.
Since I assume that you won't do that, I'll be just fine with my two friends, Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson.
But go ahead. See if you can get traction for a movement to repeal the Second Amendment.

(11,064 posts)Of course, legislation directed at the problem would help.
If we can't have that, at least we can have feel-good legislation. Isn't feel-good responses what led us into Iraq when the Iraqis did not attack the twin towers and did not have WMDs?

I want to see people thoroughly examined to determine if they have the intellectual and emotional wherewithal to own and handle a gun. I'm willing to take the test... and I'll even give up Grandpa's collectible rifles if it's determined I don't fit the bill.
I want to see guns removed from homes where there are felons residing, or where there are mentally ill residing.
How many of your friends have been killed by armed freaks of nature who shouldn't have had a gun at all? Three of mine have... Seal Beach, 10/12/11. Plus a woman who was sitting in the chair where I had my hair done dozens of times... a stranger, sure, but we shared space that proved fatal for her and it could have easily been me.
No one wants to "grab" your fucking guns... we just want to be sure you aren't a few ants short of a picnic. Your use of this slur is telling... very telling indeed.
