Hate Crime Arsonist Says FOX News Got Me “Riled Up”

Fire, firearms and fiery hate speech -- a lethal combination.

An Indiana man faces a sentence of 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to hate crimes stemming from brandishing a handgun and setting a fire in Islamic center. Randolph Linn, 52, of St. Joe, Indiana says he targeted the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, Ohio because he drove by it many times while on the road as a truck driver and had been "riled up" by watching Fox News.

“Every day you turn on the TV, you see Muslims trying to kill Americans,” he said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. When asked whether he thinks all Muslims are terrorists, Linn reportedly responded, “I’d say most of them are.”

“And I was more sad when Judge [Jack] Zouhary asked him that, ‘Do you know any Muslims or do you know what Islam is?’” a member of the mosque told WNWO after the hearing. “And he said, ‘No, I only know what I hear on Fox News and what I hear on radio.’”

<snip>

His statement says it all, doesn't it?

I have a mother whose entire world view is formed by Fox "News", Beck, Limbaugh and even Savage. Not that I'm saying she'd ever turn to arson or any sort of violence, but it's so difficult to have a good, comfortable relationship with people whose minds have become addled because they are addicted to the intellectual crack that is Fox "News" and right wing radio. If the have any sort of emotional vulnerability, it is downright dangerous.

It's because everyone else in the media wants to appear to be balanced, so they are not called out. Instead, the media hunts for liberals they can point to and say "everybody does this." Except that everyone doesn't.

Whether Fox News actually is guilty of inciting people to do violent acts is not for me to decide but incitement is and has been valid reasoning for ordinary people to do dumb things...
