The appeal of the Texas redistricting case will NOT affect California's Prop 50

Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democratic leaders earlier this year announced Proposition 50 as a way to offset Texas' plans to try to send five more Republicans to Congress. The voter-approved measure redrew California's district maps to try to send five more Democrats to the Lower House.
When Prop 50 was initially introduced, there was language in the measure that stated California would only move forward with its redistricting also known as gerrymandering efforts if Texas proceeded with its plans. That language was removed from the measure before it reached Newsom's desk for him to sign into law.

(16,364 posts)That was because there was a referendum passed several years ago that took it away from the legislature in favor of an independent commission. In order to return it back to the legislature, that needed to be overturned with a vote.
The Texas legislature had kept their authority all along, so as of now, the two states have the same redistricting methods.

Geographically aligned, rectangle.
Current district is a mess. Includes areas that I may go to once a decade.
Now we are a 50/50 area so likely got lucky and I havent studied the other districts closely but a quick review doesnt look like anything crazy.
As a bonus my district lose Cota de Caza (home of the original Housewives of Orange County and largest gated community in the US.) They get to align with Temecula, large exburb with some driving an hour plus to work in San Diego, Orange, Riverside, San Berdo and LA Counties.
Makes me happy that the aligned all the crazies together and snobby Coto gets to be tied to some meth heads over the mountain.

Now they will be represented by a gay congressman. It's a thing of beauty.

(57,332 posts)Trump started this fight. If we end up winning it, that's tough shit for Trump. California will keep its voter approved 5 extra blue seats. It serves to balance the other red states who have been gerrymandering maps, not just Texas.

(173,120 posts)The TX ruling would *not* invalidate CA's new districts. The amendment passed by Prop 50 mentions Texas, but there's no trigger provision. It's just an explanatory reference. ballotpedia.org/California_P...
