"Voting for him ruined us." FAFO and our friend the leopard says, BURP.

“Voting for him ruined us” — Pro-Trump husband panics as his British wife is forced toward deportation despite 40 years of legal resident.

The husband of an Irish green card-holder being held in immigration detention is openly criticizing President Donald Trump’s immigration drive — despite having backed Trump when he last voted.

“It’s crazy that this is happening. It’s just crazy that this is even allowed in this country. That’s the problem. It shouldn’t even be thought that this should be OK,” Jim Brown said in an interview with Fox affiliate KMOV, expressing disbelief at what his family is facing. Brown’s wife, Donna Hughes-Brown, originally from Ireland, came to the U.S. at age 11. They have been married for eight years, he said.

KMOV reviewed court records showing that Hughes-Brown wrote a $25 bad check nearly ten years ago, for which she repaid the amount and completed probation. Yet, Brown said the government argued her

Brown said he has attempted to contact his Republican representatives — Eric Schmitt and Josh Hawley — as well as ICE and the White House, but none have replied. Missouri’s Republican governor, Mike Kehoe, sent Brown a note saying the matter was a “federal issue.” “I want somebody to have the guts and the fortitude to stand up and say, ‘You know what? This is wrong,’” Brown insisted.

He told Newsweek at the end of last month that he now “100 percent” regrets casting his ballot for Trump. “Trump advertised that he was getting criminal illegal immigrants and deporting them, which I don’t disagree with. But that’s not what he’s doing,” Brown said.

There are plenty of people who come to the US as adults, especially if they have a US spouse, and don't want to get US citizenship. It's been perfectly ordinary to spend 30 or 40 or 50 years here on a green card - again, especially for spouses of US citizens. It was not a targeted category of people as it seems to be under the Miller-Trump regime.

I will also note that this couple was a little naive. It sounds to me like she was arrested for the bad check, which suggests that it was deliberate in the eyes of the prosecutor (they don't really arrest you for simply messing up your checkbook). It was serious enough for her to get probation, despite the attempt to downplay it. I'd bet if you look into that incident, it's more than a $25 mistaken overdraft and probably has some elements of consistent fraud. For them not to grasp that this arrest and conviction would be an issue in Trump 2 was very poor judgment.

Exactly! I've been saying this for years. The true believers think God sent Trump to punish the people they want punished.
The problem is that Trump has placed a huge number of mean, angry, hate-filled, violent people around him. He did this to insure the that there would be maximum chaos, and maximum pain throughout the land.

Trump doesn't care about his base. They're his "useful idiots"; the ones who carry out his plan of destruction.
He'll settle for nothing less than the total destruction of our Constitutional Democratic Republic, and he moves further down that path each day.
There is no rule of law, only the rule of Trump. No one is safe in the land of Trump.

Seriously. They actually thought they'd be safe. It was only those "criminal" brown people, the ones who were doing bad stuff here, like picking your tomatoes so you could have salad. And the liberals were going to get arrested and made to work in the fields, so it wasn't going to hurt the farmers. Or the people with other low-skilled jobs, like factories and hotels (somebody has to clean those rooms!). Let's make the liberals dig the ditches, and run the sewage systems, and all those nasty things.

Gofuckme page is priceless

https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-donnas-fight-for-justice-and-freedom

On July 29, 2025 while returning home from a visit to Ireland Jim Brown and Donna Hughes-Brown were met by a US Customs agent upon landing at O’Hare Airport in Chicago. The agent detained Donna for questioning saying she needed to sign some paperwork and telling Jim he could not go with her and that she would be put on the next flight to St. Louis. Jim proceeded to come home and wait for a phone call from Donna. When that phone call finally came it was to say that she was being detained- not arrested- and that it was going to possibly take a day or two to sort through the misunderstanding. Unbeknownst to Donna and her family at that time, was that this new Big Beautiful Bill Act law had passed. This law targets not only illegal immigrants but also the LEGAL immigrants who have been living here legally for decades. The Big Beautiful Bill Act states that any permanent resident alien (with a valid green card) or anyone with a valid work/humanitarian/investing (or whichever) visa, that has had any minor infraction on their record (including speeding tickets or other minor misdemeanor traffic violations), are subjected to being “detained” until they are given a court date for potential bond release. After that, a following court date will be scheduled to discuss possible deportation.

They are from bowling green Missouri … in the middle of Sam graves district … a huge MAGAt

They will get no help

And I bet they voted for every single stupid republican who is ruining this state.

I have little sympathy for them because people like them are too stupid to understand how stupid they are …

Jim and Donna are both very strong supporters and helpers of our community. They are often involved with multiple volunteer organizations and projects. They both are hardworking, honest, and caring individuals. They are good servers of God; humble people who are always willing to help, and kind friends that shares knowledge and wisdom with anyone in need.

If she had basically all the benefits of citizenship on her green card that mattered to her and didn't envisage this scenario coming up, she might have just not bothered. People have other things to do in their lives.

I haven't gone through the US immigration system but my experience with New Zealand immigration is that they want all kinds of crap at every stage and everything has to be within the correct date range at the same time or it expires and you have to start over. I had to have police certificates from every country I had ever lived in saying I'd never committed any crimes there which couldn't be more than a year or two old. This included China which didn't have an online way to order or pay for this certificate and send it overseas, would not accept an application from an agent, and took six weeks to process the request, so I had to literally go back to China for six weeks to apply for it in person. This because my original certificate was six months out of date and New Zealand Immigration would not accept proof that I have been living in New Zealand continuously during the gap so could not physically have been committing crimes in China during that time period. Plus I had to give them up to date medical certificates, proof of employment and having enough funds to support myself, two other forms of valid ID, character witnesses, etc.

I've been a permanent resident in New Zealand for 15 years and never bothered to go for citizenship. The only things I could do with citizenship that I can't do as a permanent resident are run for elected office, compete on the New Zealand Olympic team and travel on a New Zealand passport which are all pretty remote possibilities - although the last one might tip me over eventually depending on how septic my US passport gets overseas. That or the prospect of no longer having to file tax returns in the US despite not having lived or worked there for 20 years.

I'm friends with a gay couple who adopted their babies using surrogates in the US and despite neither of the kids living in the US past the age of a few weeks old, they are are going to have to file tax returns for the rest of their lives regardless of whether they owe anything or not unless they renounce US citizenship. So who knows, it could be a tax thing.

And as an Irish American I just can't bring myself to swear an oath to bear faithful and true allegiance to the British Crown. Plus I think I may actually have a bit of PTSD, since dealing with New Zealand Immigration the first four times (for student, work, residence and then permanent residence visas) was such a hassle coinciding with one of the worst times of my life. I don't think you can discount the level of stress around those processes and the lasting impact it can have on people that may make them just not want to deal with it again if they don't have to.

You spend months if not years having completely uprooted your life and handed it over to a faceless bureaucracy and if any of the thousand of things that could go wrong does go wrong the stakes are you end up broke, homeless, unemployed and back in a country you probably had pretty good reasons for leaving in the first place.

But anyway, there's any number of reasons why someone who has achieved permanent residence in a country might never bother to take the final step. And none of them excuse deporting her for having written a bad check a decade ago.

I guess her husband will have to get used to the idea of living in Ireland. It’s quite nice this time of year.

If she’s been here legally for forty years on a green card she should have applied for citizenship years ago. De-naturalization is a far more difficult process than revoking a green card. Plus, you can keep your prior citizenship in most cases. I have dual UK and US citizenship and it makes life a lot easier traveling between the two countries.
