That said, the occupations not deemed professional among the health care space include nursing, physician assistants, physical therapists and audiologists, according to the education news outlet Inside Higher Ed.
Per the outlet, other professions not included are architects, accountants, educators, and social workers—which sector representatives pushed to be included in the list, given that they are high-demand occupations.
It has also been reported that engineering, a business master's, counseling or therapy, and speech pathology will not be considered "professional" either.

Fri Nov 21, 2025, 11:12 AM

His changes to student loans are just so wrong, he's fixed it so people will be in debt forever. He's made it so more students will never finish school. He's made it so people will pay for years only to see their balances continue to rise. It's a debacle people aren't even awake to yet, but millions of students are going to be living with the consequences for decades.

And many kids just won't be able to go to college, so colleges are going to start to shrink and close too.

There are literally scores of ways he made it harder for students, especially students from working class families.

Fri Nov 21, 2025, 11:44 AM
Nov 21

That shortage will be even more of a crisis as our Baby Boomers are reaching that age where they need more and more medical and nursing care.

We are pricing patients out of the health insurance market as insurance corporations bleed us dry. Even if you can afford insurance, healthcare is often mediocre or unavailable due to cost-cutting, profit-taking, and staff shortages.

I talked to a friend last week who has been diagnosed with cancer. He has waited six weeks for a consultation with an oncologist and still has not got an appointment. My neighbor lives alone and has age-related dementia. Her family is trying to get her in to see a neurologist for an evaluation. They will have to wait five months for a consultation.

Having healthcare run as a for-profit business is insane. To be sure, any healthcare system will have problems. But our current system is DESIGNED to put patients last and profits first.

The less value a patient gets for their money, the more profit the corporations get.

As of 2024, ~75% of CPAs were Baby Boomers and quickly approaching retirement, and since 2010, the number of accounting graduates have decreased by ~20% -- the accounting profession is getting hit at both ends.

People may worry that AI will replace all accounting jobs, but it won't. Maybe some -- mainly data entry/low-level bookkeeping, but those pursuing master's degrees that are impacted by this change would not be fulfilling those roles anyway -- but the accounting profession will continue to exist for the foreseeable future.

Many states are already relaxing standards to become a CPA now because of the shortage.

I was traveling through the middle of nowhere in Wyoming when I got very sick. My Google search showed there was no hospital for over 100 hundreds of miles, just a sole Urgent Care Clinic in the small town off Highway 80 I was passing through, so I stopped there.

The only trained medical person there was a PA, but she was amazing. Wrote me a Rx for antibiotics and I was on my way. Thank God she was there.

Discouraging PA study by dropping them from the list of professionals is pure insanity.

Kevin Kinser, professor of education policy studies at Pennsylvania State University, told Newsweek: "I don’t think the point is to discern professional degrees from other degrees in terms of loan eligibility. It is to limit the exposure of the government to loans that will not be repaid, whether because of default or through public service loan forgiveness policies. So the list includes professions that generally result in high salaries, and neglect professions that have lower earnings or less prominence. The exception here is theology, which may reflect more political calculations than anything else. There is also less of a sense of using loans to encourage people to enroll in other programs from a workforce development perspective. We need nurses and teachers for example, yet loans would be unavailable to support people entering these professions."

Nurses and Accountants generally earn good salaries. They should be a low risk for potential failure to repay their loans. Kevin Kinser sounds like an idiot. Not a good look for Penn State that he is Head of the Department of Education Policy Studies at Penn State.

They can continue to claim we don’t produce enough engineers in this country so they can undercut the wages. So, not only will they not train Americans for what they want, they won’t even give loans to study the subjects that are supposedly hard to find talent for.

My wife told me about the story (I was aware of it from DU) and I read off the ridiculous list of jobs.

It hadn’t downed on me and until I saw your post i hadn’t seen anyone bring that up here. Many of these are probably seen by the Clustertrump as “women’s jobs”. I think it’s also because these are degrees that could go into public service and be eligible for PSLF loan forgiveness (like I did). This is a backdoor move to not have to get rid of PSLF. It also casts them out into loans from banks which go on your credit report AND may need their parents to co-sign for.
