We had many Statesmen, both Republican and Democrats, when I was younger. Now? I can't think of one at this time.....

(129,385 posts)is why they favour the environment, infrastructure and broadband expansion and programs to lift people out of poverty. I don't know why you would paint Democrats with the same brush as Republicans.

(662 posts)but there have always been greedy corporations, politicians, wall street types, etc. My gut feeling is that back in the 60's and earlier there were fewer laws or at least enforcement around corruption. So politicians got rich by things other than investing and so they had an easier time of doing the right thing as they were also lining their pockets.
The other thing to remember is back then the max tax bracket was huge, we brought in tons of money and that allowed for not only pork barrel projects but also projects that were good for society as a whole.
