Papeles, por favor? I got that in Indio, Ca. I'm a born American, of Italian-Irish ancestry. It was 1964. It scared the shit out'a me. I was 20 years old, had no papers, other than a N.J. driver's license.
The young guy who had been sitting next to me on the Greyhound pipes up: "Well sir, we don't rightly give immigration papers to Yankees coming into Mississippi.
Agent: "Where are you from?"
Me: "New Jersey."
Agent: "O.K., go on,"
