Following Commie Europe's lead, Trump is making Boxing Day, Dec. 26, a national holiday.

Only good for certain agencies because it is a declaration.
Release the papers.

I'm guessing you aren't a federal employee so you might not have been aware that this is a common practice.

(37,306 posts)He gave some--but only some--federal employees (and only federal employees, since he could do no more) both Xmas eve and Boxing day off.
A few things should be noted. Giving Xmas eve off is a fairly common practice, if it's not on a weekend. These days, not doing so would strike people as Scrooge-ish and spiteful, mean spirited. (But if it's on Saturday or Sunday, meh--such an order would be redundant, unnecessary, and mockery-worthy.)
Giving Boxing day off isn't that uncommon, but only when it's a special circumstance: The day must fall on a Friday. If they don't get the day off, the workers go to the office on Monday and Tuesday; have Wednesday & Thursday off, and come back for Friday, to nobody's contentment.
Obama signed the same kind of EO in 2014. Bush II in 2008. and 2003. Trump in 2025. Clinton in 1997. Reagan even did it. So Trump's not doing something extreme or novel ... He's following 40 year precedent. Which is incredibly unlike him, I'd say.
Giving some federal employees the day off just makes a fairly unproductive day slightly more unproductive.

(38,114 posts)Happened every year at the University where I worked. Keeping the buildings closed between Christmas and New Year's Day was cheaper than heating the buildings to open, then reopen them for 3 days for relatively non-productive employees.
Yes, it's different for federal employees - but this is getting far more attention than it deserves.

(45,970 posts)Must be a slow news day. Its basically a tradition for the president to give federal employees an extra day off on Christmas Eve and/or the day after Christmas, especially when those days fall on a Monday or Friday.

President Obama also issued an order closing the federal government on Monday, December 24 in 2012.
President Biden issued an order closing the federal government on Tuesday December 24 2024
President Clinton issued an order closing the federal government on Friday, December 26 1997.
Bush and Reagan also did the same thing.
