The Minneapolis Star-Tribune Is Struggling

Recently, they shut down their printing plant and now print the paper in Des Moines, Iowa. The print version continues to shrink in size and home delivery is getting more and more sporadic and has started arriving later and later. Most days, it's an afternoon paper for me.

On the other hand, for some unknown reason, they started publishing the daily comics in color during the week. That has never been the case. I wonder if they think that's going to save them by attracting more subscribers. It won't. Still, color comics pages are fun to have, I guess. I'd prefer more news coverage, though.

Reading a newspaper on some device is just not the same at all. The act of holding a newspaper and taking the time to read stories that are sometimes much longer than anyone could tolerate reading on a small screen or even a lager one is important.

I started reading a daily paper when I was only 8 years old. I'm 80 years old now, and I'm still looking forward to my session with the paper each day. I spend a lot of time, now, as a retired old coot reading websites, but it's not at all the same, nor as rewarding.

The newspaper taught me to read long-form stories and to think about and interpret what I read. For me, it is the best and most revealing source of the news that is happening each day. No other medium is as effective.

Anyhow, it looks like people are no longer interested in that. A pity.
