I am usually an optimist and have been my entire life, but at this point in my 77 years I really am losing that optimism. I just don't see many Americans taking this seriously enough. Part of me is just glad that I've lived most of my life in a democracy with all it's good and bad parts, so I keep my sanity by not dwelling on what might happen down the road. I live a very small life, my two children are not even middle aged any longer, so they can carry the torch for me while I keep informed but still enjoy the simple things in life - a good book, a couple of like-minded friends and family, beautiful music, nature, my walks in the park every day, my house and garden. I can't waste any of my remaining years on what might come in the future.

When I looked back at all I've lived through and witnessed, I felt like in spite of the bad parts, we've progressed in so many ways - 2 steps forward, 1 step back. I was able to remain somewhat optimistic because life runs in cycles, but as long as we are still moving forward, it was worth it.

I never anticipated anything quite like this though. We seems to be retreating backward at an alarming rate and I can't see any resolution. So as I am adjusting to being in the final chapter of my life, I have to adapt to this madness as well?

I also have grown children and we can talk about what is happening openly, but it is my 11 year old grandsons that I'm most concerned about. They are still so innocent.
