On second thought, it probably wouldn't have mattered. Pootie would have found him anyway, especially since he was regularly posting stuff online.

Supposedly, it is impossible to find out unless you have a friend in your local government willing to risk his/her job to tell you. I happen to have some ex (sorta) Mossad friends who have the capacity to find out “if” but not necessarily “who,” and as long as some nameless government agency doesn’t start sending me bills for all the translation work, I don’t really give a rat’s ass. Before the wall fell (it became public later), East Germany used to listen in on millions of their citizens. Their socialist gestapo (called the MFS or “Stasi” for short) had so much information, they were drowning in it, and didn’t have the personnel to process it all.

The land line has been in our German house since it was built (not by us) in 1973. We got a new number, obviously, but never ditched the land line. We did use the phone before there were cell phones, believe it or not. The whole smoke signal routine never really caught on in Germany.

13. Processing that information is what all those "AI" data centers will be used for.

Big Brother will be watching all of us.

I put "AI" in quotes because whatever the hell it is it is not intelligent.

15. Having computers pluck key words out of phone calls has been around for decades

Say “Allah,” or any number of other key words, and computers will flag and mark for listening almost any phone call on any device. To program AI to recognize which of those conversations are potentially of interest, and to recognize every nuance in every known language and dialect would have to be a formidable task, though.
