After a night of violent confrontations between aggressive ICE agents and protesters in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Donald Trump menaced the state of Minnesota with a threat to invoke the Insurrection Act that could be a prelude to martial law.
Taking to Truth Social early Thursday morning, the president accused Minnesota lawmakers of being corrupt and warned them they need to quash protesters confronting armed DHS agents who have been violently grabbing people off the streets and in the their homes and hustling them away to detention centers.
Trump wrote, If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota dont obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State. Thank you for you attention to this matter! President DJT."
Trumps threat comes as a federal judge is examining a request from the state to compel the president to make the Department of Homeland Security under Kristi Noem stand down as tensions grow out of control.

(76,462 posts)it was used then ... I can't think of a single time a previous President has used the
inserection act. The protesters in Minnesota have every right to do so and those rights are covered by the Constitution. Trump is an idiot.

(1,269 posts)The most recent time was during the Rodney King riots of Los Angeles, President Bush (the father) invoked it to help pacify the unrest.
Here's a list I found.

(6,214 posts)Last time was after the police were aquited in the Rodney King beating trial. Historically it's mostly been used to uphold civil rights. After the Civil War, Grant invoked it a number of times to fight against the KKK. JFK and LBJ invoked it to enforce civil rights in the south.
Not sure how Trump would use it in Minnesota. But something around Epstein must be bothering him. Maybe it's the outpouring of support for the Detroit auto worker.

I highly doubt whatever showdown is coming will be Civil War III with Glocks and Ar-15's.

(8,316 posts)In the seventies in my home town police went on a rampage killing people and throwing their bodies in the bayous. People started shooting back and police had to start riding three and four in each vehicle to defend themselves from the pissed off citizens. Police cars couldn't go into many parts of town without sustaining continued barrages of gunfire. The police backed down.

(13,736 posts)They haven't helped Trump and the Republicans enough yet that we won't get the House. So far, I don't see us snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, try as we might.
It should bother us that Trump is calling rumbles in Minnesota. He wouldn't do that if he didn't see it as a win for himself and the Republicans. We're letting him pick the hill we fight on and the people he wants to fight for us. Again.
