CA-01: Gov. Newsom sets Aug. 4 special election to fill Rep. Doug LaMalfa's seat, with a June 2 primary

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced the date for a special election to fill the congressional seat left open after the death of Rep. Doug LaMalfa, waiting until the last possible day to hold the election under state law.

A primary for the special election will take place on June 2, happening at the same time as the state's primary for the November midterm election.

If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote, the special election would take place on Aug. 4.

Whoever wins would serve out the remainder of LaMalfa's congressional term, which ends at the end of 2026.
