Governor Abigail Spanberger was inaugurated Saturday, and with it issued a series of day one executive orders. Among them is one giving her the option to end a relationship initiated by former governor Glenn Youngkin between Virginia State Police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.
According to numbers obtained by The Virginian-Pilot's Kate Seltzer, as of November, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, had detained over 6,200 people since former Governor Youngkin entered into a 287(g) agreement with the federal agency early last year. That agreement deputizes Virginia State Police to assist ICE in its roundup of residents.
And Saturday, shortly after her inauguration, Governor Spanberger signed an order that gives her "the option to remove Virginia State Police from this agreement," according to a gubernatorial spokesperson.
Inaugural speech
In Virginia, our hardworking, law-abiding immigrant neighbors will know that when we say well focus on the security and safety of all of our neighbors, we mean them too," Spanberger said.

If one Governor can get such an agreement established, this could quickly be taken up by other states.
The rules should include:
* No masks
* No display of assault rifles unless involved in a specific immigration action requiring S.W.A.T. (e.g. hostage situation)
* Every officer clearly identified by name and number.
* Every uniform must say "ICE" in large letters, and may not use the word "Police" because they are not police.
* All actions limited to enforcement of specific judicial warrants naming the individuals sought.
* No interrogating of random people not named in warrants
* No random traffic stops
^ If they face obstruction from locals, they must call the local or state police to deal with that -- no actions on their own.
Where are Illinois and Minnesota on this? They should be doing the same thing.

(2,346 posts)because >90% of Americans would agree these are sensible rules, especially considering what ICE has been doing.
And I would add:
* No detentions, arrests, interrogations or other contact with people not named in the JUDICIAL warrants.
* ICE must post a $50,000,000 damage bond for funds to reimburse residents for damage done by ICE, and those funds disbursed at the sole discretion of the Governor or her representative.
