Some 1,500 active duty Army paratroopers have been put on alert for a potential deployment to Minnesota, according to two defense officials.

The soldiers are from the 11th Airborne Division, based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, one of the Army's premier infantry formations and a frontline force in the U.S. military presence in the Pacific, positioned to help deter China. The division is also the military's leading formation for Arctic warfare.

Airborne troops are infantry once they hit the ground. Extraordinarily good infantry but infantry.

If Trump invokes the Insurrection Act, an order to move into Milwaukee will not be the sort of patently illegal order the military will disobey - at least until a federal judge orders them to withdraw.

The Army placed the units on prepare-to-deploy orders in case violence in the state escalates, the Washington Post report said.

The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to use the Insurrection Act if officials in the state don’t stop protesters from targeting immigration officials.

"If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Thursday.
