I worried that this country might be destroyed by wars, space aliens, and evil from another country. I never thought it would be so badly damaged by stupid people. Stupid people who are getting info from evil people from this country.

(1,308 posts)I wake up every day to an unimaginable nightmare. This once great democracy that so many of us loved, fought for and believed in has been massively damaged by an evil, corrupt egomaniac. In one year, he has eroded what it took two hundred fifty years to build.
I loathe Trump and his enablers and hope they suffer the full measure of the pain they have wrought, either in this life or the next.

(7,477 posts)I turn 70 in a couple of weeks... and like you, I never thought this country would be so destroyed by its own citizens. I always knew we were too tribally divided, and figured that the lack of follow through with Reconstruction would someday come back to bite us in the butt. But I just never imagined the kind of mess we find ourselves in now. I honestly don't think I'll live long enough to see it sort itself out and get back on the right track. It's all too scary; and my body too fragile to be any good to anyone, except for standing with a sign and yelling with what voice I have yet. I didn't comply in the 70's, and I won't be complying in the future, either.
We're in this together... and worst case scenario, mayhap we "elders" of the country will form our own "tribe" for survival's sake and for companionship with like minds. I do believe we need each other, holding close to family, friends, and our extended family (such as here on DU) in order to keep sane and kicking. I lost it last week... and in fact, I took a few days off from everything that had to do with news, including DU.
I did log on tonight, hoping against hope that Orrex would have a new post up, saying "He's dead!" But alas, it was not to be... (sigh)

The biggest problem with stupid people is that they think theyre smart.
They are not.
Truly intelligent people know there is more to learn.
Stupid people cant be bothered to continue learning. They are stupid.

(10,379 posts)I am just over a decade younger than you, and I have watched as stupid people have destroyed pretty much everything because they cannot stop being stupid for my entire life. It started locally, but as I travelled I saw it everywhere les as well. Plus, a number of them do not want to stop being stupid. What shocked me was that people generally don't seem willing to act to stop the tidal wave of stupid from rolling down the street.
I think the issue is that we keep wanting to act like these toddlers can be reasoned with. When a toddler is about to knock over an expensive vase, you don't start telling them that maybe they need to try and find other, more constructive things to do with their time and that they should consider the others in the room and blah blah. You grab the toddler and stop them from knocking over the vase.
We need to do more of that, I feel.

Trump is the oldest serving POTUS in the history of the country.
The problem with old people is that ARMD (age related mental decay) in themselves is never recognised from within.
They haven't changed, so it must be other people, right? /sarcasm
Lower age limit for the POTUS job is 35, but why no upper age limit?
Time to adapt or change the rules!
Trump never had a working brain, and he is just getting worse.
Dangerously sad and upsetting times.
