This is an indication of his knees going out. I only learned this myself last year when a family member had a knee operation. Prior to that, he could not walk a straight line and even after the operation, it took some time for him to be able to do so.

The knees play a role in balance. Frankly, I'm surprised he hasn't fallen yet. He probably has and we don't know about it.
