How can these representatives vote against us? Have they turned on the news or social media in the past few months?
There have been 1000's of people across this country in the streets against ICE and their brutality. Why are they not paying attention?
Voting to keep massively funding ICE just makes it harder for the rest of us.
It is a vote against we-the-people.
I don't understand. How can we get anywhere with this kind of voting?
Will you join me in contacting these people today? I think they need some education. Or - call their office to let them know your opinion.

(5,012 posts)They have caved every single time since trump took office.
As frustrated as you sound (rightly so), I am even more so to the point that I am considering leaving the party to become an independent. It's only on paper of course. But I'm done waiting for the Dem leadership to re-discover their spines. They are completely oblivious to their floor scraping approval ratings and the reasons for them.

(8,357 posts)I have been hearing how angry dems are that their leadership is failing them.
(DU, please allow this tread to stay on. We need to be able to express this.)

(40,740 posts)Our candidates still send out a ton of ads. They also canvas & knock on doors.
mysteryowl
(8,357 posts)My solution was to put a sign on the door that says No Soliciting.
it works for 1/2 of them.

(8,357 posts)Before we started to lock the screen door, they would fling it open and pound on the inner main door and ring the bell over and over.
OOOHHH, that makes us want to answer.
CrispyQ
(40,740 posts)People have this idea that because they knock you must answer & some of them expect it in a timely manner. I've been in the basement working out & heard someone ringing the bell multiple times. I sit by the open front window in the summer & one young man rang the bell three times & then walked across my lawn, as he left & said, "I can see you in there." So? I have the right not to stop my life cuz a stranger came to my door uninvited, probably to sell me something I don't want.

(5,012 posts)With all the technology available these days, all in a small handheld computer, and the leaders can't figure out how to message more effectively.
The cynic in me thinks they are just happy with the status quo because it's easier to ignore their constituents and work for their mega donors this way.

(40,740 posts)the ones who can change it are a subset of the ones who benefit from it. The dems are definitely better advocates for the People, but they would be better still, if we got big money out of the process.

(53,329 posts)I live in his home county actually. Frankly I voted against him in his first, and so far only, contested primary. Clearly, I didn't get my way but he is now the only one who might be able to hold the seat as currently drawn. I actually think he is more likely to lose than win in the general anyway.

We need to clean up our democratic party. We need all our leaders to support we-the-people.

(13,760 posts)... and it has the indirect effect of harming the word when used in other contexts such as the phrase "public education" or the "Department of Education." Using the word "education" to imply stupidity on the part of someone as in, "educate yourself!" is the same. It's immoral, either unintentionally (on the part of authentic progressives), or intentionally (on the part of people who use it to ridicule, satirize, or impersonate progressives).

(13,760 posts)..."call their office and let them know your opinion?" It's better than suggesting they're dumb or calling to mind historic misuses of the word "education" by authoritarians. Imo

(7,027 posts)The real question is how much support does ICE and Trump have in their districts?
mr715
(2,953 posts)they voted in the affirmative. They did not vote present. They did not not vote.
They took an affirmative stance.
mysteryowl
(8,357 posts)mr715
(2,953 posts)Votes are framed as affirmative (voting for) or no (voting against).
However, there are also non-votes which can be protest votes or due to absence or whatever.
By electing to vote against the majority of their caucus, they are taking a particular active part in the enabling of ICE policies. Alternatively, they could have voted present and instead required ALL GOP voters to be there to vote to pass the bill. Instead, they (the 7 Dems) allowed GOP members cover to not vote. It is a bipartisan bill now.

(38,317 posts)Here's Gluesenkamp-Perez's statement:
When fishermen in Pacific County get in trouble out on the water, the Coast Guard makes sure theyre safe. When theres flooding or landslides in Southwest Washington, FEMA helps our families get back on their feet. The Department of Homeland Security is extremely important to my community. I could not in good conscience vote to shut it down.
Many in my community, myself included, believe the Administration was on the right track when they pledged to secure our borders and uphold law and order. However, it now appears to many of us that in pursuit of politically motivated removal goals and rushed timelines, federal law enforcement is being pressured to exercise overly aggressive tactics that endanger law enforcement and civilians. This is corrosive to the long term security and stability of our great country. Indiscriminate, overly aggressive slogans like Defund ICE are not the solutions. We should not be forced into a false choice between having no border security and arresting US citizens.
In a DHS shutdown, ICE would continue operating with limited oversight thanks to funding in the One Big Beautiful Bill, which I voted against. Meanwhile, agencies like the Coast Guard or FEMAand communities like minewould take the hit.
It frustrates me to no end that House leaders on my side of the aisle have again embraced a false narrativethat shutdowns solve problemsinstead of being honest about the tools we have at our disposal and working towards bipartisan solutions to protect public safety and our constitutional rights.

BTW, the slogan is "Abolish ICE", Marie. Let me add: FUCK ICE.
