Just a suggestion. If your area gets ice,

put a sign on your door, INSIDE, saying:

Be careful of ice on steps and sidewalk (or deck, balcony, etc.)

or words to that effect.

I do this to remind me to slow down.

I'm no expert on these. Some just have little cleats, some sort of springs that grab snow or ice SheltieLover 1 hr ago #17

Before leaving house, walk outside naked. This will remind you to go back to bed until next week.

They're quite a bit more expensive, like double the price, but having been running in Northeast winters for my entire life they're worth the premium. Got mine at the ready for tomorrow in DC as a matter of fact!

I don't do hiking or outdoor running. I just don't want to fall and hurt myself on the walk/driveway when shoveling. Did that last year and spent plenty at the doc's. I see the value and would rather spend the money on the prevention than on relieving the pain! But I also don't want to go overboard on performance if I don't need to. I honestly don't know if hiking is more dangerous than clearing snow (and sometimes ice).

Thanks.

I bought my daughter & her wife these YakTrax for walking & they love them.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0094GO9DA?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

$21/pair.

Apologies for the crappy amazon link.

I had to look up what I'd ordered ahead of a snowstorm 2 yrs ago. They live in Chgo so lots of snow & ice

The ones with what look likd razor blades on the bottom would freak me out as I could see myself slipping & slicing my legs up. But those are for special applications like those wanting to run on ice etc.

I hope this helps. There are lots of styles & brands to choose from. Some have actual chains - like chains they used go put on snow tires. Perhaps those might work fof you, but I'd think they would be uncomfortable to walk on.

Good luck!

Pls let me know what you think of them?

I've never personally worn or owned a pair. These days, I never leave the house & it usually only snows once or twice here per winter.

1. If ones area gets ice

or

2. If ones area generally doesn't get ice

I place post-it notes on the inside of my door and inside my vehicle all the time. Sometimes it looks like someone with dementia lives here.

There is NOTHING wrong with reminding yourself about safety issues and don't let anyone else tell you different.

You know what they say, opinions are like assholes and everyone has one.

Don't forget to walk like a penguin on ice if one does have to go outside for any reason. Be safe, raccoon.

My wife and I do that — and we remind each other of the danger.

We are often in a hurry — especially when getting our 16-year old puppy out first thing. She has a hard time with the steps and her bladder, so we carry her out. A reminding sign or Post-It can be most helpful when there’s no time to think.
