The Hill
Several Senate Democrats on Saturday came out against a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after another deadly shooting by federal authorities in Minneapolis earlier in the day.
Trumps endless empowerment of federal immigration agents has resulted in yet another senseless killing, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) wrote on the social platform X. This brutal crackdown has to end. I cannot and will not vote to fund DHS while this administration continues these violent federal takeovers of our cities.
On Saturday morning, a Minneapolis resident was shot and killed during an alleged armed struggle with Border Patrol agents, just a block from where 37-year-old Renee Good was fatally shot in her SUV by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer Jonathan Ross. In another incident, a Venezuelan migrant was shot in the leg after federal officials claimed he struck an officer with a shovel or broom stick.
Days prior, seven House Democrats joined with nearly all Republicans to pass a sweeping $64.4 billion funding bill, which includes roughly $10 billion for ICE. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) was the lone GOP congressman to vote against the measure.

(8,603 posts)Whats happening in Minnesota is appalling and unacceptable in any American city. Democrats sought common sense reforms in the Department of Homeland Security spending bill, but because of Republicans refusal to stand up to President Trump, the DHS bill is woefully inadequate to rein in the abuses of ICE. I will vote no, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement Saturday. Senate Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., who broke with her party and opposed its recent shutdown standoff over the Affordable Care Act, said she wont support the DHS measure.
The Trump Administration and Kristi Noem are putting undertrained, combative federal agents on the streets with no accountability. They are oppressing Americans and are at odds with local law enforcement, Cortez Masto said in a statement. This is clearly not about keeping Americans safe, its brutalizing U.S. citizens and law-abiding immigrants. I will not support the current Homeland Security funding bill.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., another one of the eight Democrats who voted for the November bill, came out against the current package one day before the Minnesota shooting. He said Congress shouldnt validate a president who is acting chaotically and unlawfully and that he wants significant amendment to it.

(3,051 posts)At least from his statement, it reads like Sen. Schumer has control of the caucus. "Will not provide Dem votes"
