In the wake of another fatal shooting of a US citizen in Minnesota by a federal officer, the Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, said his party would block a funding package next week if it includes money for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

This is a list of the 19 most centrist Dem caucus Senators (plus Schumer, for a total of 20), many of whom have cast bad votes in the past. Many of those (and it is a BFD) have already said they will not defect and instead vote No (they are strike-throughed). My strikethroughs may be missing some, btw.
I simply do not see 7 Yea votes, and there are only 8 who have not said they are No.
If Bennet and Schiff vote No, getting to 7 is then impossible, even if Fetterman, Shaheen, Hassan, Peters, Gillibrand, and Coons (the other 6 of the 8 unkowns) cave-in and vote Yea.
John Fetterman The likely defection IMHO atm.
Jeanne Shaheen (key, if she says No, along with Hassan, it's very, VERY unlikey they get to 7)
Maggie Hassan (key, see Shaheen)
Jacky Rosen (a big No)
Catherine Cortez Masto (a big No)
Gary Peters (key, see above)
Angus King (a big No)
Elissa Slotkin (a big No)
Ruben Gallego (a big No)
Kirsten Gillibrand
Tim Kaine (he was one of the 8 cave-ins last shutdown)
Chuck Schumer (Durbin, who is not a centrist normally, fell on his sword for Schumer and was one of the 8 Dem cave-ins during the last shutdown)
John Hickenlooper (a big No)
Chris Coons (possible defection, he said he is 'conflicted')
Brian Schatz (he was one of the 8 cave-ins last shutdown)
Mark Kelly (a big No)
Adam Schiff
Michael Bennet
Peter Welch
Mark Warner (a big No)

(2,591 posts)I know Gillibrand has called for ICE to be abolished in the past (2018) so I'm hoping she will be a no.

(10,883 posts)When theyre killing two constituents in my state, and theyre taking 2-year-olds out of the arms of their mom, and they are taking an elder Hmong man out of his house and putting him out there in his underwear, and then figuring out they have the wrong man, Klobuchar told moderator Kristen Welker, no, I am not voting for this funding.
Schiff said he was "not giving ICE or border patrol another dime, given how this agency, these agencies are operating."

Thanks for laying out the votes for us, C.

(53,872 posts)Fetterman (very likely yes)
then the 5 of the remaining 6 unkowns (assuming Fetty is a Yea) I trust the least:
Shaheen (she has been simply terrible lately with so many bad votes)
Hassan (she has been so poor as well lately, along with the 2 Dems from NV, Cotez Masto and the ex House Problem Solver, Rosen, BUT both NVers said No, so there is hope for the 2 NHers)
Peters (his true colours came out for the worse once he announced he was retiring)
Coons (he has become less centrist lately, thank fuck)
Gillibrand (she is all over the map at times over the years)
and the most likely No.........
Bennet
Bennet can put it to bed by saying for sure he is a No

(8,409 posts)He was voted in as a solid democrat and since his stroke, he has forgotten that.
a stern letter of warning will do the trick
mysteryowl
(8,409 posts)agree! I was just thinking of the useless stern letters sent by higher up democrats (wont name names) to republicans. Stern letters of warning do nothing to discourage republicans. Fetterman needs to be removed the next time he is up for reelection.

I was so angry with the 7 democrats in the house that voted to fund the DHS with the thugs being heavily funded.
When I saw Schumer woke up - post 2nd murder in Mpls, mind you - I thought others would like to know that too.

In FY 2026, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had $332.72 Billion distributed among its 16 sub-components.

Republicans have in Congress and legislatures are utter scum. Our part, sadly, often lacks the courage to take a stand against this cretins destroying our country. Some of them act like they can bring a handshake to a gun fight.
