He was nominated by President Trump in August 2017 to serve as general counsel of the United States Department of Homeland Security and was confirmed by the United States Senate by voice vote on February 15, 2018.[5]
He was fired as DHS general counsel on September 17, 2019, reportedly because he had resisted illegal policies and actions pushed by White House Senior Advisor Stephen Miller.

(4,990 posts)Right now we are less safe on the streets of the country, as well as overseas, because of the existence of DHS.
They created a monster...indeed.

(161 posts)ICE was doing its mandated job on the tiny number of illegals who were criminally inclined. Even then there was an issue over minority targeting, but the legal system requiring warrants, allowing access to counsel etc. , held until the deals with foreign prison labor camps were made.
Then it began to come clear what the real racist agenda is, leading up to todays obscenities.
It is not certain how soon before ineffectual peaceful protests will fail in favor of the rebellious alternatives. That moment is coming if observed from someone outside your system.
Yet all may not be lost. In the US a civil war brought about government changes that in time led to immense prosperity. In the Canada of the 1830s a widespread rebellion over colonial rule was resolved peacefully after a few skirmishes and government reforms.
Despite current events trending against unified survival, I believe your nation of 350 million has the depth of goodwill and the civil resources to regain its footing, and standing, among other countries. Some of us up here are rooting for you. Im one of them.🇨🇦

(8,038 posts)Or VP Vought, or someone equally odious. We're fucked unless we completely dominate in the midterms. That will at least slow the rate of fuckage.

(1,197 posts)If Trump leaves before this term is up, and Vance Can't Dance is sworn in...
there will be no VP. I don't think any nominee like the ones described will make it thru the Senate. It is a risk tho.
If the Democrats retake the House (presuming elections) ... then the there is no chance of any VP nominee being approved.
Instead you will have effective VP Mr/Mme Speaker of the House. Pick a good one!
I don't believe Vance can hold the office. He has no constituency that matters, and is a cipher. He will be forced out, somehow. That's the bigger risk.

(27,685 posts)*KGWB is a mashup of GWBush and KGB (the Soviet secret police that it resembles) I thought the two were so tied together that it fit. (and Tom Ridge, the first Secretary of the KGWB, just looked like a commissar, sans battle ribbons.....)
This guy is a nasty Repuke (a redundancy, they're ALL nasty), but at least he is seeing a little light.....

(9,789 posts)and our own Senator Byrd was, if I remember correctly, the only Dem senator to vote and speak out against it. It NEVER should have passed, and the Department of Homeland FASCISM should never have even been considered.
DU members had our hair on fire over it, but the fascists won out. They've been in this for the long game ever since WWII.
