404 Media thread on their coverage of ICE. Please bookmark and share.

THREAD: 404 Media has been covering ICE and the technology they've been using to surveil and raid "targets", detain people based on a flawed facial recognition app, and lie about violence on the streets.

They have established itself as an agency that cannot be trusted to live in or present reality.

In October, we learned that ICE does not let people decline to be scanned by its facial recognition app, Mobile Fortify.

Photos captured by Mobile Fortify will be stored for 15 years, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, the document says. But it has its flaws (tbc below)

Flawed how? In testimony from a CBP official obtained by 404 Media, they described how Mobile Fortify returned two different (incorrect) names after scanning a woman's face during an immigration raid. ICE has said the app's results are a “definitive” determination of someone's immigration status.

Why Minneapolis? How are they choosing their targets?

404 Media also recently learned Palantir is working on a tool for ICE that populates a map with potential deportation targets based on addresses, and ICE is using it to find locations where lots of people it might detain could be based.

404 Media also obtained material this year that explains how Tangles and Webloc, two surveillance systems ICE recently purchased, work. Webloc can track phones without a warrant and follow their owners home or to their employer.

More ICE tech: Material viewed by 404 Media shows data giant Thomson Reuters enriches license plate data with marriage, voter, and ownership records. The tool can predict where a car may be in the future.

Let's also bring in the connection with tech giants: Google hosted a CBP app that used facial recognition to identify immigrants, while simultaneously removing apps that report the location of ICE officials because Google sees ICE as a vulnerable group.

And what is happening inside ICE detention centers? 404 Media also learned that the federal government claimed that the day after it was sued for allegedly abusing detainees at an ICE detention center, a “system crash” deleted nearly two weeks of surveillance footage from inside the facility.

404 Media (@404media.co) 2026-01-25T17:17:28.257Z

In our latest: The feds created a drone no fly zone to stop people from recording ICE.

The order appears to attempt to criminalize the use of drones to film Immigration and Customs Enforcement and DHS employees who are detaining people all over the country.

404 Media (@404media.co) 2026-01-25T17:19:29.625Z

404 Media is watching ICE grow from an already horrifying organization into a deportation force that is better funded than most militaries. It's why we made a zine about the surveillance technologies used by ICE.

Is to try to get you to do a facial scan. I’ve been trying to find a way to stop the prompts.
