I wouldn't draw any conclusions from this picture.

At one time he was a frequent figure at DFL events & but backed off of overt partisan activities when he decided to run for the state Supreme Court in 1992. Prior to that he served as Assistant Attorney General while Hubert (Skip) Humphrey, III was AG (Note: Minnesota has not had a Republican AG since 1971). If memory serves, there had been some hope he'd be the DFL Senate candidate in 1994. While on the court, his philosophy did lean left.
