A 100-foot tunnel, secret bunker and weapons stash found at MAGA activist's California home

Shasta County authorities started out investigating a suspected illegal marijuana farm but ended up making a far more unsettling discovery: a massive stash of illegal firearms and a secret underground bunker at the base of a 100-foot tunnel on a MAGA activist’s property.

Michael Jay Kamfolt, 40, was arrested Jan. 20 after members of the California Highway Patrol discovered the bunker and confiscated an array of illegally possessed weapons — including three AR-15-style assault rifles, a sawed-off shotgun and more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition — while serving a search warrant at his Anderson home. He is no longer in custody, according to county records.

“This operation went far beyond an illegal grow,” CHP Northern Division Chief John Pinoli said in a statement. “The combination of a hidden bunker and an alarming cache of illegal firearms and ammunition highlights the threat posed to public safety.”

Kamfolt is a well-known conservative activist who had shown up at protests and county Board of Supervisors meetings and had repeatedly raised concerns about voting fraud, according to reports from the Shasta Scout. Shasta County has become a hotbed for hard-right governance and election denialism in the Trump era of American politics, and a staunchly conservative majority took control of the county board in 2022.

There's an apocalyptic RW Nationalist church that pretty much runs that area of California. And illegal grows is the big regional moneymaker.
Would not be surprised if a significant number of local "enforcement" wasn't also involved with this jerk.

That area of California is isolated for a reason - pretty much anything that's ever lived there over millennium is migratory.
Unless you're a tree, it's really difficult to overwinter. In the 60's we lived in the Reading area for a year when Dad got a temporary HS teaching job up there - there were a couple weeks off and on during the winter when store shelves were empty and gas stations low on fuel, and that was living on a major interstate where the plows went through regularly...

It was a long winter year, too. There was a week in April when the snow was still coming down, roads were still closing, and people were hitting neighbors up for food and other household items the local grocery stores couldn't keep stocked.
Anyway, Norther California attracts all those stubborn, wilfully ignorant Libertarian asshole types who honestly think they can survive long term in comfortable, isolated "freedom" with all the modern conveniences while keeping segregated from the rest of the woke around them live in a fantasy.

They think because there's all those natural resources around, they can just live off the land like sturdy pioneers and mountain men, doing whatever they want without considering the amount of waste and destruction they cause by not thinking and just living emotionally.

They don't need no help or handouts from the government or a market to trade with for better tools, equipment, and non-seasonal goods...

Until they do.
Because wanna be "Rugged Individuals" ignore that Northern California -heck, wilderness in general - can be a really harsh, unforgiving, and deadly environment. Especially if you're casually into the survival lifestyle or depend on modern technology - like electricity/generators, food storage, running water, or medicines - to survive.

An isolated sustainment lifestyle is F'ing hard, even if there's a community of like minded around the homestead. There's a lot of abandoned homesteads and ranches in the Western wilderness for a reason.
