PCSD: Human smuggling suspect shot after firing at Border Patrol helicopter, officer

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Authorities said a human smuggling suspect with a criminal history was shot after firing at a Border Patrol helicopter and agents in Pima County early Tuesday, Jan. 27.

The FBI identified the suspect as Patrick Gary Schlegel, and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said he was being pursued by Border Patrol in connection with a previous incident.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said the 34-year-old Schlegel, of Sahuarita, was the only person in the vehicle during the incident.

The shooting happened near Arivaca, which is about 60 miles south of Tucson, around 7 a.m.

This wasn't ICE-stapo, it was CBP agents who regularly patrol that area of the AZ./Mexico border. nt MarineCombatEngineer Tuesday #3

so it wouldn't surprise me if the narrative put out so far is fairly accurate.

…I think it’s also sensible to maintain a default assumption that ICE is lying. And that goes double for any incident where there’s no footage that could help us judge.

I mean, Wee Greg Bovino was CBP, and he was as stapo as you can get, no?

Not really wanting to argue. Just want us to be clear that it actually appears to be CBP who are the worst of them. Wasn't Jonathan Ross CBP?

and I get your point, but this area of AZ is a known smuggling route and this guy was well known to the CBP agents and, if reports are accurate, was wanted for an earlier incident.

Not all CBP agents are bad guys, the ones I've dealt with on my travels have been nothing but professionals.

Anyway. The circumstances in this case do look entirely different from the political killings.

And, clearly, you know the terrain better than do I.

Even then it was not uncommon to see Border Patrol or Sheriff helicopters suddenly appear over the hills.
