https://newrepublic.com/post/205806/ghislaine-maxwell-epstein-department-justice-settlements?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=the_ticker_rssLongtime Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell has revealed that more than two dozen men received cushy plea deals with the government.
In a habeas petition filed Tuesday aimed at preemptively ending her prison sentence, Maxwell alleged that 29 friends of the notorious sex trafficker had been "protected" by the Justice Department by way of "secret settlements."
Those settlements went to "25 men" and four potential "co-conspirators," reported The Daily Beast. The petition has prompted questions regarding the identities of the cloaked individualsand why the DOJ would offer them protection.

(4,532 posts)Had the probably completely illegal requirement that no one else could be prosecuted for these crimes. Let me see if I can find that-- btw, Ghislaine Maxwell is using this in her appeal, apparently.

The fact that Acosta didn't notify the victims violates federal law, and is something even a first-year prosecutor would know better than to do. So I have to think Acosta knew that and intentionally disregarded that obligation.
And the fact that Acosta signed a deal that immunized the co-conspirators, the people around Epstein, is very strange. Why would he want to do that unless he was protecting powerful people who he was afraid of?

It was already overturned, hence the second arrest of Epstein and the first for Maxwell.
Acosta could not have done that deal on his own, of course. The Att General at the time had to be involved, at least to the extent that Acosta was told this situation was above his pay grade.

Maxwell is tired of waiting, she wants out of prison now. This habeas petition is a threat. If she doesn't get her pardon, the identities of these "29 friends" will be revealed.
a creature as she is, it is kind of nice to see her putting pressure on the president. It's a no win situation for him.

And the "secret settlements" weren't with the DOJ -- they were settlements in civil actions brought by victims. They were secret because, well, civil action settlements typically are confidential.
