The protest took place around 8 p.m. on Jan. 26 outside the SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Maple Grove. Reports on several social media pages that night suggested that Border Patrols Greg Bovino, ICE agents and Border Patrol agents were at the hotel. The Press is trying to confirm that information with ICE, but have not heard back.

The protestors criminally damaged a hotel sign with a shovel, threw objects at the officers, and breached the barrier tap, he said. An officer on scene announced a dispersal order to the crowd participants using an LRAD in amplifier mode. The device is used to ensure that the content of the dispersal message is clear and heard by the participants. Multiple orders were provided to allow a reasonable time to disperse.
He added that the LRAD-type of device was not used in a deterrent setting, meaning it did not produce very loud atonal noises or sounds.
The Maple Grove Police Department requested the assistance of the Minnesota State Patrol for the incident to include their vehicle equipped with the LRAD device. State Patrol troopers are specially trained in the use of the LRAD device for its intended safe use, Wetternach said.
