"If Alberta Falls, Canada Falls
Charlie Angus / The Resistance
Jan 29, 2026
"Finally. Someone in the public has spoken the word treason.
How else to describe the manipulations of the Quislings who have been meeting with Trump officials to break Alberta from Canada?
For the last year, I have been calling out the Donbas Playbook being used by the MAGA machine. I have raised questions about the massive slush fund of American money being put on the table to drive the break up our nation. And I have been calling out the manipulations of MAGA Premier Danielle Smith.
The stakes are getting higher."

(23,459 posts)For what it's worth, a poll taken earlier this month shows 19% of Albertans support separating from Canada, 75% oppose it. I wouldn't be surprised if that oppose number doesn't go a little higher once Albertans see separatist leaders canoodling with the fascist Trump regime.

(6,231 posts)And yes, support for separation, even in "Red-neck Alberta" is thankfully pretty minimal.
The gathering of signatures for a separation referendum however is now underway and I hope they show up at my door so I can spit in their faces or at least ask them WTF is wrong with you.
Approx. 177,000 signatures would be required (10% of votes cast in the last provincial election). In a way, I hope they reach that threshold so Albertans can tell them to PO and they will slink away or maybe move to more right-wing environs in another country.

or tried hard to, which will remind Albertans that she does not have their welfare at heart, but does have the welfare of private healthcare coprporations close to her heart. Keeping our public healthcare is a top issue for all Canadians.

(22,362 posts)And any separation would have to be approved by the federal government and the First Nations people who live in Alberta.
Its a boneheaded idea that will hopefully spell the end of Danielle Smiths career.

(2,603 posts)there were a few Separatists that wanted to make Western Canada a distinct country. They were definitely the Canadian equivalents of Magats, even twenty years ago. However, they were never terribly popular.
I suspect nowadays they are even less so.

(13,289 posts)they are getting funding and encouragement from the Trump admin. Alberta is not going to separate and I hope like hell we are smart enough to get rid of DS in the next election.
The biggest fight will be the disinformation and while most Canadians wouldn't fall for it, we have some real dingers here in Alberta but they are still a minority.

(6,442 posts)And probably just as effective... in that it's an empty pipe dream meant to distract from actual solutions. A 2020 poll had fully one-third of Texans supporting secession, but my guess is it's little more than a soft wish outside of a very, very few.

(22,362 posts)Only about 30% of Albertans support separation, and the referendum is nonbinding.
Even if it passed, separation cannot occur without the approval of both the federal government and the people of the First Nations on land within Alberta (and they are a hard NO).
But Angus is correct- those meeting with Americans to strategize and fundraise are traitors.

They werent laughing with someone, they were laughing at someone. That person wasnt in the west Edmonton offices of the Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta. But Jeffrey Rath, the lawyer whos become one of the loudest mouthpieces of the Alberta separatist movement, was the target of derision for some of Albertas First Nations leaders.
On Thursday, the leaders from three treaty lands all rejected Raths promise. They gathered to show that theyre united against the current petition that, if successful, would trigger a referendum on Alberta independence. Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, the Blackfoot Confederacy and the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation have launched suits against the petition and the provinces Bill 14, which allows for citizen initiatives like the independence push.
Chief Billy-Joe Tuccaro of Mikisew Cree Nation, which is also planning to launch a lawsuit against the province, said that many Indigenous people remember Rath from when he represented a number of First Nations in their lawsuits against the federal government. Just a few years ago, Rath was well known for taking Indigenous treaty claims as far as the Supreme Court of Canada.

Oil and gas resources belong to the First Nations people and we signed a treaty to share it with you. We didnt sign a treaty for separation, added Allan Adam, chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation.
