Senate Democrats and White House Reach Spending Deal

Senate Democrats have struck a deal with Republicans and the White House to pass five spending bills to fund a large portion of the government for the remainder of the fiscal year, as well as a stopgap measure to fund the Department of Homeland Security for two weeks while they continue negotiating guardrails to rein in immigration agents. Republicans had pushed to fund the department for several weeks, but Democrats insisted on a shorter-term measure. It is unclear how quickly the House can and will process those funding bills after the Senate passes them. The shutdown deadline is midnight on Friday.

Even when we have leverage, we don't.

FUCK'S SAKE.

Here's the positive way to spin it:

Is that the GOP really, really, really didn't want DHS split into a separate bill, and now the Dems have massive leverage on DHS bill to force changes, since there will be no downside in terms of forcing another shutdown. They also get a two week stopgap rather than a four week stopgap. The shorter stopgap means that the current political disgust with DHS informs the voting, while four weeks lets something else invade the news cycle.

Still, giving these fascisti money for even two weeks seems a fucking gut punch, especially for the brave people of Minneapolis out there at the barricades.

I suspect that there's an unstated condition as well: with DHS funding on the table, Noem has to go. Period. I'll bet she's out by Tuesday if the House passes this.

The whole reason for this potential government shutdown isn't even included in the main funding of this deal, and people are STILL upset?

Helping the people that were hurt by the last government shutdown and were the reason why the last shutdown ended, I don't see that as a bad thing. Especially when the main thing we would be shutting down the government for is being isolated and split off into a separate negotiation and just being funded for two weeks (i.e., damn near nothing when it comes to matters like these) while negotiations continue.

It should be noted that a government shutdown DOESN'T EVEN STOP ICE BECAUSE THEY ARE DEEMED ESSENTIAL WORKERS AND WILL CONTINUE TO TERRORIZE OUR CITIES REGARDLESS.

And both immediately thought this was a sham deal.
